FrogTape painters tape. No bleeding?

i was going to try it on my qbert cab i'm painting now but i'm using oil base. I read on the back that it was designed for latex i believe.

ah here it is on their website "FrogTape® is a pro painter's masking tape and the only tape treated with PaintBlock® Technology. FrogTape was designed for use with latex paints. PaintBlock reacts with the water in latex paints to form a micro-barrier along the edges of the tape. This makes FrogTape more resistant to paint bleeding"

bleeding isn't a matter of tape.. it's technique.

wanna elaborate?

If you simply lay masking tape down to make of certain areas and paint away you most certainly will end up with areas of bleeding.

My advice would be to use an old credit card to scrape the tape onto the surface (kinda like what you would do with a squeegee). Paint over it and while the paint is still wet, remove the tape.

The trick is actually to take a brush and do a thin outline the length of the tape. That creates a seal (of sorts) and allows you to paint without worry of bleed through.
Make sure to peel of the tape before the paint in completely dry though.

There was a thread recently about a guy having terrible results (and they were) but he used spraypaint. I used it to tape off my ceiling and trim in the hallway and it worked EXCELLENTLY. YMMV I guess, but I won't hesitate to use it again for latex.

EDIT: Also, the guy who used it as a mask trimmed off pieces of the tape, and from that video it's pretty clear that only the edges of the tape are treated with the paintblock stuff.. so he had paint bleeding under the untreated areas. makes sense to me.

It was my thread. I found it had a pretty weak adhesive compared to other painters tape. I use $3 shuretape now, and stay away from it. I believe for it to work properly it has to be used in certain ways under certain conditions for it to perform well.

"Frog Tape Sucks"

Looking at that post and the pics, I'm gonna guess you trimmed the tape to fit the curvature of the artwork. Looking at the FrogTape video, It looks like they coat the edges (and only the edges) of the tape with some chemical. So essentially when you trim the edges of the tape you are removing that protective barrier. Anyone want to do an experiment and see if this is the case?

Lay down a strip and paint over it, and next to it, lay down another strip and trim the edges off with an xacto knife and paint over that. See which one keeps from bleeding.
:)

No I didn't. I tore the tape in half, and used the straight edge to do the masking job. If you've ever tried to tear or cut tape, you'd know that it tears really rough, and isn't suitable for clean lines. Had I used a box knife to smooth out the edges after I applied the tape, then I would have left grooves in the artwork underneath.

But you also used spraypaint. I'm pretty sure that's why frog tape didn't work for you, and I assume that's why. It worked 100% super crisp lines for me when painting latex on latex.

frog tape is incredible. I am in the process of painting every room in a house. rough 1400 square feet. i have had no bleeding anywhere. i would use this anytime.

That may be right, but the cheaper painters tape fared much better. Frog Tape also had a habit of lifting in some areas after application, so I had to smooth it over with my hand before painting.

The point is, I saw it advertised- gave it a go, and it didn't work. It was more expensive than the other tapes, and I wasn't aware that it only worked with certain types of paints. Depending on the application, one that people here my try, it performs worse than just about any standard painters tape. It was merely a heads-up, in case anyone else purchased it on a whim like I did expecting it to be amazing.

You'll find that other people in that thread too, used it "properly," and were unhappy with the results. Here are 2 quotes from the thread, where I'm going to assume Latex was used. I think there's quite a bit of evidence that frog tape isn't the end all of painters tape. Results may vary, of course. I'll personally never use it again.

I agree that Frog Tape sucks ass - I recently painted my garage, and I used FT to mask the ceiling edges, and it sucked. An unacceptable amount of bleeding, and in some areas the tape wouldn't stick at all, but the standard blue tape would.

You are correct, in my experience Frog Tape does suck. Its very low adhesion tape meant to come off easy but ultimately it doesn't stick well enough and doesn't block paint like it says it does. I will stick with blue painters tape :)
