I have a Frogger that is having a small sound issue. When the game is first plugged in, the sounds all seem to work properly. After a few minutes, some of the sounds are no longer correct. For example, the credit sound works fine when first plugged in but after about 10 minutes, when you add a credit it makes this weird high pitched beep. Also there is an occasional random sound that is produced that will continue after the game is over. I was going to replace the AY-3-8910. The description says "programmable". That does not mean that it has to be programmed prior to installation does it? Im guessing no but wanted to make sure.

If things fail over time, it usually means heat related. Get a can of freeze spray and see what happens.

Also, could be a capacitor in the sound section failing.

Messing around with it some more this evening. I can play a game or 2 after a restart and things are normal. Once it starts making the weird credit sound, I can do a quick power cycle and it's back to normal for a short while. I tried freezing the ay chip and there was no change. Any ideas?

always replace caps on Konami (it's not really Sega believe it or not!) games such as these. they're bad enough they leak now.

Got the cap kit and the AY chip ordered. Hopefully it will be here on Saturday and ill give it a go.

Got my parts in today. Installed the cap kit first. No change in the sound. Installed the new AY-3-8910 chip and the problems are gone. Glad to have the pcb capped as well though as I'm sure problems would have come from there sooner or later. I. This case the AY chip fixed the problem.

don't think the caps were a wasted effort, I've had Frogger boards where they leaked and I had to treat them the same way I would leaking alkaline. :p

I think the one the AY3 chip was actually bad. it would fail the longer you had it on.

Im having sound issues as well. Where'd you get the AY-3-8910 chip & cap kit? Much appreciated

you guys seriously need to start bookmarking this site and learning how to "search" for the parts you want to buy, $5.50 for the cap kit and $6.00 for the IC at:

Ok, i admit I was lazy on this, but I do know how to search. Also, there are parts out there that aren't as quality as others, so I dont think asking others who I respect in this hobby to suggest where to get parts is a sin!

skip the eBay search and just bookmark all these trusted vendors and search on their sites (in no order):
...and probably 20+ more I missed, feel free to add them to the list! :)

I purposely LEFT OUT the big players (mouser, digikey, newark, grainger, sparkfun, alliedelec, jameco, ntepartsdirect, element14, adafruit, amazon, etc...)
no reason for these chumps to get any more of your money or business.

Bumping this to report I am having the same issue and ordered the chip and caps from Arcade parts and repair. The location for the chip is on the top board right which is for the sound stuff?

Might want to check voltage also. My Frogger wasn't having the same symptoms but was doing some weird stuff and it turned out my voltage was pretty low, down to like 4.7... Adjusted it up to 5.0 and I haven't been able to reproduce any of those issues.

Where do you check the voltage?

Right at the board where the edge connector connects. I wanna say pin 1 and 2 are ground and pin 3 is 5v. But look up Frogger pinout to double check that. And at least on mine, the power supply has a pot to adjust the 5v and 12v.
