I am getting ready to repaint the black on my Frogger cabinet. It doesn't have any real water damage but looks like it had been stored in a very humid environment and the particle board is a little flaky around the edges but it's not to bad and I am going to leave the original wood grain on the cabinet but I need to repaint the black. You can see in the pictures some bare wood that should be all black. My question should I seal the wood first with primer or something else before I paint it black and what type black should it be? Satin black or a semi-gloss black. Right now I was thinking to prime it with a gray primer, sand and finish with a semi-gloss black. So what should it be? I want to get it as close to original as I can.
Thanks

Although I'm not positive what it originally looked like, I would go satin black. I think semi would accentuate the flaws in that material too much. That's a definite sand between coats job, as you want to smooth it out some. I'd spray as dark of a primer as you can first, likely a dark grey, then multiple coats of satin black, sanding lightly between coats. I'd imagine 3 coats would do it. Time hasn't been kind to most Frogger cabinets and if you can save that one, then well done!

And I thought I was the only one whose Frogger cab looked like that.Mine probably looks slightly worse.I used primer and tried the quick fix of satin black spray paint...eh.I do like the way the satin black looks though and will be rolling on the satin black either this weekend or when I take my vacation. One thing's for sure,I sanded the hell out of the top of the cab and I could not get all the pits out or make it perfectly smooth.Probably going to just do the best as I can as it's the top and back of the cab, which few people will see.

Anyway...my vote goes to satin black!

satin..... gutsman sand as smooth as possible....then use a quality spray primer to fill in the pits take your time, light sand with higher grit 220 or so repeat primer, after the pits are level gray specks.....light sand entire area with a sanding block and 400 grit!!!!

then paint: 1st coat is a LIGHT coat, then medium.....repeat medium if needed
