Gamers to Challenge Frogger World Record

In 1998, an episode of the hit television show "Seinfeld" featured the classic arcade game Frogger. One of the show's main characters, George Costanza, was visiting a childhood restaurant that was closing only to discover his beloved Frogger machine still in place with his initials and high score of 860,630 still on the screen.

For many years, classic arcade game enthusiasts have challenged the reality of this score since the highest known score in 1998 when the episode aired was approximately 400,000 points. Back in the day when the Costanza character allegedly set the record, the actual score was much lower. No one believed the 860,630 point Costanza score could be reached. Since that time two legendary classic arcade game players, Donald Hayes of Salem , NH and Pat Laffaye of Westport , CT have been battling back and forth with the world record on Frogger setting a new record four times in the past four years. In June 2009, Laffaye reclaimed the title with a score of 771,060 set at Richie Knucklez Arcade in Flemington , New Jersey .

On Friday and Saturday November 20th and 21st, Hayes and Laffaye are set to battle side by side at The American Classic Arcade Museum inside Funspot on Route 3 in Weirs Beach, New Hampshire in an attempt to break the legendary Costanza score. The public is welcome to attend. "We're very excited to host this event," says Gary Vincent , President of The American Classic Arcade Museum.

The American Classic Arcade Museum was established in 1998 and is a 501c3 non-profit corporation dedicated to the preservation, display and play of vintage coin-operated games and features over 250 pre-1987 games. Located inside of Funspot , certified by Guinness as the world's largest arcade, the museum is open daily at 10am. More information on the museum may be found on their website www.ClassicArcadeMuseum.org

Hi guys, any chance that you'd be able to start streaming these sorts of events online? There are quite a few sites out there now that make it really easy; all you need is an internet connection and webcam.

Hey Chris:

This is something that has been discussed between myself and ACAM staff for quite some time. Yes, you are correct that it can be done easily with some of the services on the web. Generally speaking, "easy" is not always "better" and I am of the opinion that I can provide a better service to the gamers if we bring that function in-house. I would prefer to build a dedicated streaming server at ACAM and do it ourselves.

The problem we have with streaming gameplay is that not all gamers like to have their techniques broadcasted to the world. I would want to get a sign-off from the gamers involved that they are OK with it.

Regardless, I do not have the time to make this happen for the Frog-Off. My time while I am at ACAM this week is occupied in other areas including the Interstellar restoration project you & I have been discussing over at BYOAC. However, it is a strong possibility that streaming could be available for our 2010 Classic Gaming World Championship event.
