Well, been seeing this in the local CL and ignored it.... continued to ignore it... Then a fellow Klov'er had to call it up on another forum and, well, it's sitting in my garage now!
But, back to the CL ad.
Rampage Arcade Machine $200, states he paid $450 a while back.
He also states that the monitor is bad, posts mediocre pics, but states it plays blind.
OK, I can deal with a monitor, so I call, ask for the best price and he knocks $20 off if I come get it this weekend. I confirmed it WAS booting up on the phone as well. Weather forecast is bad, so I decide to make the 1.5 hr drive immediately (Friday) and go get it.
Well, as you guys can guess, I get there and the CL shenanigans begin.
The cabinet is beautiful, better than the pictures show, BUT, when we plug it in the marquee lights and NOTHING ELSE!! I had unplugged the monitor as the guy said it "Blew" and figured I'd deal with that later, but crap, no sound either. Well not to let a drive go to waste I hum-haw around and state thoughts about board prices and such... next thing the seller produces another "spare" PCB to add into the deal. OK, so odds still aren't good, but I noticed the coin door lights are out and there is a ticking sound from the power supply....hmm, OK I'll roll the dice and go for it.... the machine comes home with me....
This morning I pulled the power supply out, and install a switcher... hooked the monitor back in and plugged it in... Sound and a very out of adjustment monitor came to life!! Made some quick adjustments and the monitor looks good (burnt, but still a good picture)..... Best part was, I swapped the PCB's out and both work perfectly. And the icing on the cake, the switcher I installed was a freebie from a local arcade that had tossed some machines outside...
I figure the story behind the sale was that the power supply dies and the guy sees the picture disappear, and likely a "pop" from the speakers. So the monitor was what he thought had gone. But I doubt the machine ever played blind... He did say the monitor never had a good picture, but the black level/contrast/brightness was way out of adjustment, other than the burn, the monitor looks pretty good now.
So how did I do? $180 for a working Rampage and an extra PCB???
I'll keep my eyeballs pealed for a new tube for a swap, some cleaning is still needed too.
The sides, CP, Bezel, and Marquee are all very nice. I'll need to refinish some of the bolt heads to make the machine look really sweet.
Should I sell the extra PCB? What does a board run, tested good?
Any interest in the original power supply, do people rebuild these?
One last pole question, should I swap the coin door with a really nice one that has the Midway logo plate on it?
I think Rampage comes with the blank door this has, but I like the logo doors so much better!
