Free Sundance....

Just finished reading the entire thing. I had to crack up towards the end when Mclemore mentioned how the Little Sweden property owner had explained why he was away during the time the game was taken.

My family owned a cabin in Strawberry (about 15 mins past this place) from 1987-1997. Even back then the place was a dilapidated, abandoned shit hole. Not one time did we ever see a sign of life or activity, and we drove by it thousands of times. The only time anyone was ever there was when it snowed and people used the hill to sled and shit. What a colossal crock of shit.

its funny because the most vocal guy in that thread "devil1982" hasn't logged in since "
Last Activity: 06-24-2012 12:11 PM"

and we never had update on the game, was it restored, was it sold for 32k!?

Definitely the greatest thread ever.

Game isn't all that rare, though. There are several examples of this game in existence if not more.

As I recall, Seamus repaired the game and it was at an SC3 event, per his request, then went into the owner's storage.

Nice to see that one will be at CAX.

It's fun to read this old thread, but it was definitely a black eye for this forum in my opinion.

I think if you are going to link that thread, you have to link the THIS OLD GAME, Saturday supercade episodes as well.

I could not find that video, I looked for it, just for you! Oddly enough I found a linked video that rich for TOG liked[emoji1303] named TronGirl!

Pretty much the lesson from that whole mess.

Learned a lot from that thread....most obvious lesson: If I ever rescue a game from a condemned, broken down, abandoned, ruddy crack house I will tell NOBODY!

"Claim Jumping" didn't end with the Gold Rush or Oil boom. It may be hard, but if you find some good stuff, consider keeping mouth shut unless you are OK with it all going to someone else.

Also, don't advertise that you went on to private property, no matter how abandoned, and took something. It's like those idiot criminals who get busted because the make a post on Facebook after robbing a store.

I'm not going to deny how cool Sundance is, due to rarity, history, the artwork, etc, but... I recall seeing a vid of the gameplay and thought it looked positively awful.

Glad to see that ultimately it was saved, is now in legal hands and the original owner was paid.

Personally I'm still torn on the whole thing, I guess in hindsight I'd say it shouldn't have been touched until permission was gotten from the legal owner, but then again the cat was out of the bag and SOMEONE was going to take it, and most likely by someone who would have kept their mouths shut and never sought out the owner. At least the guy who did take it was honest enough to seek him out and do so at risk of having it backfire badly, which in a sense it did, not everyone would have done that. And I've got to ask myself, what if it was a BOUNCER in there or something otherwise lost to the world and was one vandal away from being gone forever? Again, I'm torn. I guess given that the ROMs for Sundance are preserved and there were already a few complete examples in the hands of collectors, it should have been let be until the right channels had been gone through.

I know I sound like a broken record as this always seems to be my suggestion, but somebody ought to do a repro-run of the PCBs, artwork and CP, given the near-murderous desire by many collectors to get their hands on these. The oddball monitor obviously is impossible but I think I remember hearing it'll work with smaller, standard Cinematronics monitors, sourcing keys for the CP would be tough but I bet they can be gotten from somewhere, and the cab I think is the same as Armor Alley and Rip Off.

Yeah not cheap or easy, but neither was the shit storm over getting an original one.

Having read that, I don't understand all the hate towards the eventual owner of the game.

Nearly EVERYONE scrambling to get that game was trying to contact that owner to buy the game. Like it or not, the game was still legally owned at that time and the right way to do this was to contact the owner and buy it, which is exactly what happened.

I understand the value of the game and people's desire to get their hands on it but I just don't see any other way it could have reasonably (and legally) turned out.

That's my $.02, for what it's worth.

And really, a 23" vector monitor? That's crazy.

no, not everyone. One person did Breaking, Entering and theft to go and get it without even trying to get permission. That same person was told not to mess with or even turn it on. What did he do, he tried to make it work and messed it up even more (ask seamus if you don't believe me how he made things far worse).

What you can gather from the story is deep pockets can solve most problems. The funniest thing about it is that you would think jehuie would have learned his lesson from it, but since greg made it all go away and rewarded him for doing it, there were no consequences to his actions. So what did he do? he followed it up with a federal crime of breaking, entering and theft.. But he either figured out how stupid it was to admit to that one or greg deleted the evidence off the site of that crime.

Also, I don't hate greg for doing what he did. He really did not do anything wrong. Unless he put jehuie up to the theft in the first place, he just worked it to his advantage and beat everyone out to getting it. That was 100% fair. What I don't like is that greg is doing it with the pretex of forming a museum. I seriously doubt he will ever do that.

Yeah, a 23" monitor is waste in sundance. but then its even a bigger waste in barrier.
