saw a few threads about this but no real solid solutions. I might buy one of these that has the hand/claws intact and I'm wondering either what can I do to make sure they don't break or if there is a replacement available. just wondering what solutions anyone has come up with.

Pretty cool game, with a very deep rule set. Mine was pretty much trouble free for the four years that I owned it. Back in 2004 or so I was hearing that a repro hand was "close" so if that rumor still abounds then maybe it is moving forward.
