Slightly off subject, I'm rebuilding a power supply (actually two) for a Standard Bill acceptor. Both of these blew the main caps. I went ahead and removed all the caps. How do I, or should I worry about the scum that blew out of my main cap? Any critisism is welcomed as this is my first attempt at a re-cap.

that looks like glue to me. you can scrape it away if you want but it is not necessary.

if it is electrolytic then yes clean it off.

I hope the caps blew up because their electrolytic fluid failed. Not because there is some short somewhere in the circuitry. Don't stand above it when you turn it on the first time.

It's pretty rare for those big caps in the high voltage section to fail.

The ones on the low voltage side are VERY common to fail as are the caps in the middle of the board around the feedback section. I see there's still a cap in that middle area you haven't pulled yet. You should replace that one since it's right next to a hot running transistor.

Channel, you're right. I noticed that too after I got up this morning. Was working on it late last night (posted 1:59). The I'm pretty sure the two big ones blew. They had evidence of leakage on the bottom. The scum on the right side of the board scrapes off easily with a fingernail. I gota get a desolder station after that battle ! Wanted to remove all the caps and add them to my shopping list.

That stuff on the bottom is glue.

If the caps are leaking out the bottom then they'll stink like dead rotten fish when you go to desolder them.

Smelt funky, but not a fishing boat. Both power supplies were SMOKED. Same bill acceptor, about 18 months apart. I'd like to learn how to fix this stuff, have spare boards in stock, and not have to wait a week to get it from cross country. I'd rather pay a few bucks for caps than $100.00 for another chinese POS.The burnt electrical smell is long gone from when it blew.
