framing posters.. Need some input.

That Joust poster is wicked cool. It's too bad no one has done a reproduction run of that poster or the Gravitar, etc.

Thanks for sharing, it looks as if Michaels did a very professional job. As ZF has all ready mentioned, these aren't cheap posters and deserve a quality frame.

I agree, Joust is a very cool print.. If it was reproduced I would buy one. Since they did such a cool print for joust, I wonder if williams did anything as nice for robotron, sinistar, defender or stargate? Maybe it got special treatment since it was a pin also(but then so was defender)..

The joust poster was in horrible shape. You can see the lines where it was pressed flat and ruined the paint (look at the top in the J, U and look equal distance in both directions from there). Those lines extend almost the length of the print.

The paper for joust poster was also really thin. It was torn on the edges(The guy repaired and touched up the missing paper) and when they gluesd it down it got a little wavy/bumpy by the gold birds foot at the platform.. The guy at michaels said part of the problem was its back was almost like it was wax coated and it did not want to stick down. He said it took 3 tries to get it stick with him finally having to use foam core.

there are a few other really cool prints out there I would love to buy reproductions of. Hopefully they will get done some day:
major havoc(rare one)
tempest
red baron
night driver
mad planets
Crazy climber (never seen one, but something tells me it would be very japanese and too comical)

I just got home from getting frames for 2 movie posters I bought off ebay. I ended up getting my frames at Michaels as well. I bought 2 of the 27x40 frames off the shelf and they were on sale 50%off so I paid 20 for each. Ill post some pics when I put the posters in.

you might find that those movie prosters are actually 27x41. so check before you try to shove them in. I think places like target and walmart might actually sell 27x41 ones.

I went to like 10 stores. The largest premade off the shelf is 27x40. I will trim if necessary.

Nice job mrbill.

I'll throw out that I'd love a Joust. If someone had one in similar shape to mrbill's (or any shape, really), I'd scan it in and send it and a reprint, and the digital copy back. I have modest photoshop skills (read: slow), but have the scanner and a decent poster size inkjet printer (45 inches wide) if someone would like to take a chance.

I posted a WTB arcade posters in the WTB section, fyi....

Added a few more posters to the collection. I picked up 4 from francis. I also framed up a few more I already had..

I am a custom framer and that seems awful high, I would suggest acid free matte board, "regular glass", and drymounting on the foam core as suggested. I would also recommed a black or silver "metal" instead of the wood. Just my two cents worth, a 24x36 poster in the metal frame as described above would be about $85 complete from me. Framing has a huge markup! I am making a few bucks at that price to support my video game habit! LOL, Take care, and good luck, feel free to email with any other questions.

I would suggest matting just to add a layer of protection between the surface of the poster and the glass. Over time the ink will adhere to the glass (or plastic if you go really cheap) and it will be impossible to remove. Been there done that. Destroyed a bunch of what would have been valuable concert posters that way :(

thanks for all the suggestions. Its a long thread, but here is what I have been doing..

Some of the posters needed matting to fit in the 24x36 frames. Those that did not, have spacers to keep the art away from the glass. The prints are dry mounted(he called it perservation mounted) to the foam core.

I liked how the 1st batch came out. I am going to make sure red baron is framed correctly. Probably going to redo asteroids deluxe as the print does not look like its perfectly flat.. The first batch pretty much worked out to about $65 each(with frames and mounted). The more expensive ones were star wars and joust as they needed custom frames (plus I put anti glare glass in them).

I can imagine that there is incredible markup in these.. It seems michaels is always at 40%-50% off. Arron brothers is having a buy 1 get 1 for .01 sale. I am going to see what they have in the way of pre made 27x40 frames.

got back another batch of posters. I had them frame up dragons lair and space ace. They are 27x41 posters, but I have them cut to fit a 27x40 frame. Its no loss for space ace, but DL the red top border is hidden under the frame.. I was not going to drop $200+ framing DL and SA, so cutting them down was a cost effective solution..

I must have bought an extra DL and 2 extra SA posters back in the 90's They were all rolled together.. So if anyone is looking for them (they are uncut), let me know..

next up are:
tron legacy triple poster
tron arcade poster
firefox
pole position II

I haven't read the entire post to know if your posters are original or repros. Either way, you have several posters I would like to add to my collection (Red Baron, Tempest, Pole Position II and Firefox).

all my posters are originals. Most I have grabbed over the last 20+ years, the last few I added (i-robot, tempest, red baron, asteroids deluxe), I got from francis when he sold off his incredible collection.. I missed out on the Major Havoc poster, but it went for serious coin..

Occasionally you see originals pop up on ebay. price are anywhere from $20-$200+.

I am sure repros will eventually get done of some of posters. I know I would buy a few as some are really hard to find (MH and mad planets come to mind).

I have extras of:
DL
SA
firefox large (I think its has a tear)
firefox small
pole position (might be PP2)

MrBill2084, please PM me prices for the Firefox (didn't know there were two sizes) and PPII posters. Someday I'll find (and win ALA ebay) Gravitar, Tempest, Red Baron and a few others. :)

My collection and Web site are as follows, along with every other classic game related poster I have ever seen.

If you only have a few to frame, here's a trick... search craiglist for framed posters. You can buy them pretty cheap then remove the poster and pout your poster in it. I just searched and found a bunch of nice ones for less than $15 in most cases. I may have to do tis once I move :)

Aren't thumbtacks about $.02 each? You can save 50% if you only use two for each top corner!

Welcome to Klov! ;)

That I,Robot one is very cool!

I was very happy to get that one from Francis.. I had never noticed one for sale before..

thats a good idea especially if you can find some matted frames. Really good idea if you can find 27x71 custom stuff..

Its about $28-$35 for new frames on sale(with glass not plexi), and about $20-$25 to have them perservation mounted on acid free backing with spacers. Its about $20 more for those that need matting.. michaels has nice frames and they are on sale frequently 50%-60%. Aaron borthers does not have sales nearly as often, but they sell nice frames and carry 27x40 with glass.

Its important to have them on acid free backing and the mounting will take out most wrinkes and the poster will sit flat and not touch the glass. If it touches the glass, the poster could stick to it..

Nice Bill!

I always thought some of Atari's ads would make great posters, and sometime later this year I plan to reproduce these two as 24x36 posters using the 4 color process (sorry for the really bad scans...not indicative of the quality of the art)
