Plugging it in for the first time sure seemed staged. Can't imagine the prototype ran on a hacked asteroids board either. Seems pretty far fetched.

I know nothing about the game, but there are similar games in MAME (spcforce and it's clone meteor) which seem to be vertical versions of this game. Not sure what's a clone of what.

Man that is cool as hell! I love it, and the story. Thanks for sharing

Not a problem I figured someone on here would get a kick out of it!

Actually it seems to be a prior release of Meteoroids.

At any rate, it seems to be a fun game - no hyperspace and no shields makes it a bit more dangerous. I'd love to try out the real deal someday. Any idea how many of them were made?

No idea, the game isn't even listed in VAPs and seeing as his dad programmed it I would have to safe it was the only one, and the predecesor to Meteoroids.

The dad saw the son playing Asteroids and didn't even tell him about this?

I'd like to know more about this. In watching the video, the game plays exactly like Space Force. And IMO Space Force is a horrible game compared to the original Asteroids. It's just a rip off with better graphics but horrible gameplay. Flying the spaceship is like driving your car with the emergency brake on. And the game sends out the rocks in the same exact sequence every single game. But I'd like to hear the story on why KLOV, MARP and TG all call this game Space Force while this game is called Meteors. There's got to be a story there.

The story is all true. I'm good friends with Eric, and was good friends with Steve. I attended Steve's funeral a couple months ago.

Steve was nothing short of a genius. He knew everything about everything. When I would go to his shop, he would occasionally show me around. He did show me the Meteor a couple times, but we never fired it up. I assumed it never worked. It was buried in his warehouse amongst a bunch of stuff.

A couple weeks ago, I was at Eric's store, the Save Point, at Town Mall in Westminster. I actually got to play the Meteor there, as Eric has been going through his dads stuff, and he brought the game there. I could not believe the thing worked. It does, in fact, run on a hacked Asteroids board. I don't know how he did it, but I wouldn't put it past Steve to figure it out, or Eric to get the thing running.

If youre skeptical, go visit. You'll love the store if you're a classic console nerd. He has about 20 vids in there, mostly Pump/DDR and Sega games, and some classics.

This is probably not true as Asteroids is a vector game. Meteroids is in MAME and has it's own driver. Completely different hardware. It's not even close to being a clone of Asteroids in a technical sense. Different cpu, three sound processors, ten more roms, and way more memory. Might as well have started from scratch with a breadboard and flying wires to all the ics.

I'd love to be wrong and see a picture of the pcb to see some major hacking.

I took a peek at the board through the coin door. From what i could tell, it's an asteroids with a bunch of IC's and daughter cards hacked onto it.

I would believe it, I still think its an early prototype of Meteoroids by Venture Line. What I can't get over is how much Blasteroids looks like a more refined versions Meteors/Meteroids!

Eric just posted a pic of the board in another thread. It is apparently not an Asteroids board. At a quick glance through the front door with a flashlight, it sure appeared to be one.
