I just bought some 'fixers' on CL yesterday and brought them home.

Deluxe Space Invaders - missing motherboard, inside is decent, overall condition is good, some crap(looks like spilled soda or coffee) under the cpo plastic, coin mechs need cleaning. Side art is scratched and slightly defaced.

Millipede - side art and kick plate art are very nice. Cpo is a bit faded and the spinner is... Loose. I am told the monitor fly back went up in flames recently. I havent looked at the monitor yet to assess damage. Looks like the coin mechs have been removed. The overall frame is coming apart a bit at the top and needs to be fixed. Was told the mobo works. Also coin door panel needs stripped and repainted.

Vs Super Mario Bros - the ugliest game I've seen in a while. Marquee brackets are rusted. Marquee itself is very faded and may be a poor repro. Missing any sign of side art. Cpo is 'okay' compared to the rest of it and the controls need cleaning badly. A couple of the buttons seem to be McGuyver'd to almost work. Coin mech and coin box are missing and the wiring for the coin mechs appears to be damaged. Overall, the outside of this cab is pretty poor. I am told the board functions(I'll believe it when I see it) and the monitor needs adjustment, recap, and/or fly back replacement. There is 'donkey kong blue' beneath the cpo, so it may be a later conversion or I suppose a factory conversion. Anyone have any ideas?

I wish to restore them all. Vs SMB will be the most work, then millipede, and then deluxe space invaders which I would probably be happy just getting a mobo for and touching up some spots.

What say you? Are they worth the time to restore?

Depends.. are they going in your collection....or are you going to flip them?

The Vs. Super Mario is not a dedicated cab. Based on what you said about the blue underneath, it's either a Donkey Kong or a Popeye that has been converted in the field. The vast majority of Vs. Super Mario Bros. were done this way. The marquee is likely original (fade is a big problem with the original Vs. marquees). Unfortunately, it looks like some OP spraybombed the cabinet to make it black and you'll probably have to strip all that off and repaint. This may be a lot easier if it's a japanese plywood cabinet with the slick finish. The US particle board cabinets just have normal paint.

The good thing is that Nintendo cabinets are pretty easy to deal with. All the parts are pretty much readily available. You can probably figure out what the cab was originally by looking for mounting holes, the sheet stapled to the back door, or sometimes the original serial number plate is still on the back.

FYI, that looks like a plywood cab (which is good).

Still a PIA to strip though. Mine was the same way, painted black. Figure about $500 at least to restore it to an original DK if that is what it was. Mine is going on $600 and I have a good working monitor.

Or about $75 to $100 to just make it a shining example of a Vs. SMB conversion. That is the route I would go.

Nice pickups. I'd totally restore the Mario Bros. to a Popeye or DK, but just my preference game-wise. Millipede and SI will look pretty when they're all dolled up too. :)

Totally different cabinet.

It's going to cost you a lot more than $100 to get that to a shining example but it would be cheaper to leave it as a Super Mario. For a shining example you're going to need brand new coin mechs ($130), new side art ($60), new buttons ($20 or so), new marquee ($35 or so for a repro and around $75 for a NOS original), maybe a new bezel (although novus may save that one), new T-molding ($25.00), possibly a new CPO. Then there's all the little odds & ends, paint, etc. You're looking at, at least, $300.00 to mintify that puppy.

But yeah I've got $400 in a DK Jr. that's mostly NOS parts so you'll proably spend more deconverting to Donkey Kong (mostly because you have to buy the PCB and can't use any of the art or parts you already have).

Its not a donkey kong style nintendo, thats for sure

Sure it is. Here's the original poster's cab

Here's a DK

It's just that the DK style cab was sprayed black. That's why you can still see the orignal DK/Popeye blue under the control panel.

Yeah, as an R-Type, Donkey Kong, and a dedicated grey VS cab that currently houses VS SMB owner, I can confidently say that is a DK cab.

On the back of the vs SMB was this plate (which was obscured by black paint) that pretty much confirms it as a donkey kong.

I'm considering leaving it as a vs SMB, although I could see this coming up to a coin toss. You see a lot of people on here converting back to DK, but you don't see a lot of people restoring it to an "original" conversion... Lol. Hmmm...

Thanks for the break-down as this will most likely come down to money. :)
