A neighbor that has seen games in my garage stopped by last night about 1930 and mentioned he had seen a "Star Wars by Atari" at the curb of a house a few blocks away ( Sunday night is when people put out trash for pickup in my neighborhood). I was in the middle of fixing dinner so off goes the flame for the stuff on the stove (I couldn't get out of the house quick enough after hearing "Star Wars Curb"). We hopped in my truck and drove down to the house and there it was.

The guy who put it at the curb was outside so we spoke with him a bit. Story is it was a former roommate's machine and the RM moved out and now this guy is having to relocate so the machine had to go. He said the monitor went out and they looked for a replacement and were quoted $3,000.00 . I told him they were available for much less. He said they then gutted the machine and tossed the board set because it was so heavy in the cage. I was disappointed they tossed the boardset/cage. They then put in an LCD and used the cabinet for a MAME machine. You can see the touch pad installed below the flight control yoke. The art work is in amazing condition (right side as well). The pics are rather bad - it was dark. I have not looked inside with the back door off yet. Looking from the coin door I can see the inside back door sheet appears intact. There are still some remnants of the game inside and some harness connectors.

Depending on what I find inside, I may install an LCD (they already have a bracket system installed) and just play SW with MAME. I have a friend locally that has done that to an SW and it looks great once the graphics settings have been tweaked. Odds of locating all the parts is small - without spending a small fortune. :)

Looks like I need to start cruising the neighborhood on the eve before garbage day. I have found some computers at the curb in the neighborhood before. Just need to keep looking. I would have never expected to find an SW cabinet at the curb.

Also, I realized after I got home and unloaded the cabinet I was wearing this shirt:

Guess I could make a chair out of it and drop in a phone. ;)

where in town was this? I knew a guy that had a SW cab and moved out of his roomies house... Im wondering if this is the same one. Was it on Robin's Nest?

The jealousy is strong with this one... :(

Awesome score!

This was in Round Rock. Street not named Robin's Nest.

The fellow mentioned he had not told the former RM that he was putting it at the curb. Apparently the RM moved to another state (a while back) and left the machine.

I just couldn't see this one going to the dump (someone else might of picked it up as there are trucks that come through picking up gas grills, etc., that people are tossing). I doubt it would have been someone that really cared for the cabinet for what it is. Glad I was able to save it. :)

*whew* then there's still a chance I can buy it off him, ha!

Nice score though, man. Very cool.

I wonder if anyone who wasn't ages 7-25 when Star Wars came out in '77 will care about the franchise when we're gone/too old to care? BTW, I was 4 when it came out and didn't see it in the theatre til '97. Nice score.

I know the guy that it belongs to. He's pissed off and wants it back.

Just kidding of course. Congrats.

Hope that nobody comes looking for you LOL! But really congrats and hope that you can get it to work. Which I am sure you will!

I was only 2 when Star Wars came out, but I was plenty old enough to remember when the sequels came out. Plus I remember the first time Star Wars aired on regular TV, which was a pretty big deal. Once we got a VCR I rented them all on VHS too, quite a few times.

I'd say that Star Wars has appeal to people who grew up in the '70s or '80s, even if they weren't born (or were too young to remember) when the original movie came out.

Additionally there is the prequel trilogy that ran from '99 to '05, which probably has its own generation of fans who by extension, also care about the original trilogy.

Would have been a better find if it housed a comfy chair and a cool green phone to use while sitting in it.....

As a father to 9 and 11 year old boys, I can say with some authority that there is at least one more generation of Star Wars fans.

My kids are currently obsessed with Star Wars because of the Lego Star Wars games...
I'm sure it will last a long time, there's still a crapload of merchandise being sold...plus I don't think Lucas will let up anytime soon, even though he isn't making any more movies, he sure is cranking out a lot of other Star Wars stuff...

Well I have tried to watch Star Wars the Clone Wars and can't make it more than a minute before the channel gets changed. What a pretentious, confusing, over-thought-out pile of shit. Why does every character have to have Ewan McGregor's accent now? It's annoying enough when Ewan himself uses it.

Kids still buy Star Wars toys. The franchise is hooking the future generations as we speak. Lego, Nintendo, Hasbro, etc.. As a matter of fact, while typing this post, a 4 year old wearing a Lego Star Wars shirt just came into my shop with his parents.

Ever give out candy on Halloween? Count the SW characters that come to your door.

Funny note, my SW upright came from a "former roomate" who "moved and left the game behind" as well.

Great score!

Neither me nor my kids watch any Star Wars episodes other than the first 3 that were made. And they were already heading downhill at that point. Once they started using Muppets I was pretty disappointed. Plus Mr. Lucas can't write a script to save his life. Which is why he had to start the first movie in the middle of the story. Because he doesn't know how to develop characters. It's easier if you just jump into the middle. Then you don't have to worry about that.

I think star wars will have at least another generation or two of followers. Especially when Lucas rereleases Episodes 4,5 and 6 in 3D as he plans to.
