Found a Stargate on a curb in Memphis

The cab was at my old neighbors place across the street from my exwifes house in the hillshire neighborhood off whitten rd. That's pretty far from its home and I wished I knew the story of this things life.

Hillshire? No way - I used to date a girl in HS who lived in that area. Daneman Dr, I believe. What a small frickin world. If I remember right, Gridley's is close by to that area. Funny how I can remember what street she lived on, but I can't even remember her last name. I must be gettin old!

Thanks to AvidGeek, (post #35) I can't click on this thread anymore without thinking of a blues song. :D

Awesome..

I was thinking.. the panels would be EASY to make from 3/4 ply, if you just cut the mitered edges at the correct angles, glued up butt joints, then rounded the corners, but that wouldn't be done exactly right.

I think it would be neat to build a scaled down (mini) Williams cabinet..not like the production ones, but a scaled down 68% size copy of a Robotron cabinet, with a 13" monitor.

I never like mini games. I guess they are considered cute and have a novelty factor, but I need to do my serious gaming on a 19" monitor.

As for making the Williams control panels, I plan to round-over where the pieces join like on the originals, but I won't use veneer to cover it, because veneer is not easy(cheap) to get in my area. Home Depot and Lowes don't have it, so I assume that I'd have to order it or over-pay at some cabinet shop.

Of course that is some strength lost, but I won't forget the glue blocks.

Just a small update for anyone interested in this n00b's adventure in this new hobby.

I bought another chassis so I didn't have to mess with the cut wires. The only thing wrong with the new one that I can see is a broke horizontal width coil. I got it untested for $20 off ebay. I was able to bend the tube pins back in shape no problem, too.

Check out the discharge tool I made from Stargate's old, cut up power supply cable. There was nothing to discharge, but better safe than sorry, right?

Anyway, now that I have a complete monitor/chassis that I've been wanting for months I am going to hook up all my Galaga components this weekend and see what happens. Wish me luck.

Ok, my pops is interested in rebuilding this cab from scratch using the dumpy one as a template. I'm open to any suggestions or tips, but he has all kinds of carpentry tools including a vacuum system for everything. He also has a bunch of 3/4" ply laying around so it's not going to cost me anything. Except I think the back panel is MDF so I'll want to buy some of that to make it authentic.

I think the control panel will be the hardest part. I'll see if he can't make a drawing of the whole thing for anyone in the future. Wish us luck.

I'd just buy a control panel if I were you... Ask him to use a router and a straight-cutting bit to cut the replacement pieces. Best way to do it. Back door would probably be particle board, MDF didn't exist back then. (Or at least if it did, it wasn't available to the general public.)

+1 on buying an existing Stargate panel. Or...just keep an eye out for a Make Trax panel, it's a sucky game and offers the same design. You'll have to drill some button and joystick holes but it might be a lot cheaper.

Thanks, guys, I'll pass on the advice. I actually had an awesome forum member offer to send an old, converted Stargate CP for cost of shipping. It currently has an overlay for another game, but it's still a Stargate CP and looks in way better shape than what I have now. Hell, maybe my dad will want to build one anyway and build multiples to sell. Doubt it, but it's a thought.

I'm thinking of buying a new wiring harness from that guy who makes 'em from scratch. It's $85 I guess, but maybe that will be the better route compared to an old used one. Especially considering I don't see an old used one for sale .

metal, plastic and even fiberglass cleaner = Flitz polish

trust me you will love it..
It will make those coins shin with the help of a few soft rags too

Alright we have officially began the rebuild.I'll have pics later. I gave him all your advice on what equipment and techniques to use. Wish us luck!
