Flytrap: 1980's Arcade Style Game With Today's Technology

Hey guys,

I just released my game Flytrap on Xbox Live Indie Games. If you have an Xbox 360, I highly recommend that you check it out. I made this game specifically because I hate the games that are coming out these days. Flytrap was made with the idea of it being as simple as early 80's arcade and Atari games but with today's level of technological and graphical sophistication. The result is one of the most highly playable and addictive games ever made (based on blind playtests). Come check out the gaming world's next big franchise before anybody else even knows what the heck Flytrap is.

Description:
A character-based Galaga/Space Invaders type game in which the player controls a venus flytrap who wields a super soaker-like squirt gun. The player shoots enemies (who spawn along the horizon and move towards the player) with the squirt gun to stun them, and then finishes them off by inhaling them in a way similar to Kirby.

Where to Download:
1) From the Xbox Dashboard, go up to Game Marketplace, select Explore Game Content
2) Go down to Indie Games, go over to and select Browse
3) Select 'F'
4) Go down and select Flytrap
5) Click Get Trial Game to download the game

If you end up checking it out, please let me know what think! Also, if you have any trouble finding it on Xbox Live, definitely let me know.

-Adam

P.S. Flytrap was specifically designed to appeal to both genders just like Pac-man and Centipede.

Looks really cool. Too bad I don't have XBOX live. You gonna make a youtube video of some gameplay? That would help generate some interest in the game as well as give losers like me a small taste of your game.

You should make it a dedicated arcade game. I'd buy it then. I'll even help with the artwork.

Oh don't worry, it is something I intend to do. I want to have spinner controls along with force feedback. Since nobody else has been able to revitalize the arcade industry, maybe it's time that I do it.

Edit: The main obstacle is just having the cabinet built and designing and printing the sideart, control panel overlay, and marquee.

Yeah I'll put a trailer together over the weekend to give you a taste :).

Oh and you said you don't have Xbox live; do you have an Xbox 360? An xbox live silver membership is 100% free and will allow you to get xbox live arcade and indie games. You just need an internet connection.

Plenty of folks here that could help if they wanted. Graphic Artists, CNC cab cutters, pcb builders, etc. This could be really cool.

Yeah it could be a really awesome community project. One thing I was wondering is if it'd be more cost efficient to turn the game into a PCB or if it should just be a PC in a cabinet like Feeding Frenzy or something.

Well, If you make the game Jamma people like me who aren't interested in a dedicated cab may be willing to buy the board. I'd be willing to buy the board and any related artwork but I don't think I'd buy a full cab.

I guess the PC based game would work as well but the Jamma board is plug and play for the most part, the exception being the spinner control, I don't have a cab with a spinner.

Make it Jamma for sure, outsource it to China if no one here steps up. They seem to be on the cutting edge of Cheap and fast.

Good point, it would probably be most profitable to sell as a conversion kit rather than as a dedicated machine (unless I end up putting them on location...which is a whole different animal since I'd have to change the gameplay quite a bit to make it suitable for making money on location). The spinner controls of course wouldn't be necessary; just seemed like a good fit to me.

Yeah that would probably be the best bet. At some point I'll have to find out how much interest there'd be in such a thing and how much people would be willing to pay.

I see why you did it but the flower pot looks like a diaper, maybe something a little more manly like a pair of camos.

Is this only designed to play on xbox or can it be played on your computer? I ask because I imagine if it can be played on a computer you could build a dedicated cab that used a computer, a la MAME to run the game. Which is what current games seem to be doing these days any how.

Well the pot is really the only thing that really solidifies the fact that he's a plant; and even still, many people think he's an alien or something. But I could see why you don't like it as it does sort of look like a diaper (never really noticed that before).

It runs on the PC as well and we plan on releasing it through steam or something similar in the future. So yeah, a dedicated cab with a computer would work just fine (but right now the game is made for widescreen so that would have to be changed).

meh, I think the dude looks fine. How many classic games out there could have been radically changed (for the worse or better) if the main characters were altered? Lots.

Jumpman could have been given an Uzi 9mm.
Dig Dug could have been put in a cooler suit.
Joust could been played on dragons.

The choices that were made back in those days I think add to the fun of games. So if it looks like a diaper, let it be. If anything, go back in a couple years and release a Flytrap II game. Update the character at that time. I say keep it quirky and keep it fun.

I'm disappointed that Phet missed a prime opportunity here:

Flytrap

Player can choose between 3 character: FrizzieBare, JowStrap, Or SavMeSum.

Objective: To unzip or "trap" as many flies as you can, gobbling up the prizes you find underneath.

Game ends when the player "Traps" the fly of the Final Boss in Phetesota...

Sounds yummy.

Graphic Designer here. I'd like to work on the artwork for a project like this. I will be checking your game out on my 360 later today. Contact me if you want to talk sideart/CPO/marquee.
