Damn... I recapped a 20EZ today and it looked AWESOME... I played a few games without issue...the shaking it had before was gone... NICE...

I then went in the house to deal with the baby only to drop back in the garage 30 minutes later to find the garage smelling FUNKY as hell. More an ozone smell than an electrical smell. Of course the monitor wasn't working and the game was playing blind.

Let me guess. I blew my fly huh?

What other parts should I order (Hot?)...

Thanks

Usually you want to do a HOT when you do a flyback. But Frizz, have you:
Visually inspected the board for burned components?
or
Checked the B+
or
Ensured any blown fuses <-- chassis and main fuse
or
Checked the power supply? <-- try swapping it out ... would be my first thing to try honestly

Any 20EZ I've seen with a bad fly has been quite evident "cracked and goo"

Check the "little" fuse....just like the G0-7s.....Every EZV I've had with the "little" fuse (F301) blown, has also had a bad flyback. Yup, check the HOT....and make sure you have a few .3 amp normal blow 20mm fuses.

I think arcadecup sells new flys for that monitor but I don't know of anyone else who does.

If it was me, I'd find a working used one to put in there instead. That's what I did on my machines.

friz you know better man lol..
i try to replace every fly i can just because for $30 or whatever its worth the initial effort of replacing it first instead if letting it fry and chasing other components...

but hindsight is 2020 i guess lol sux man..

Id say fly hot and check all yer diodes etc and see whatca get...

Go with cinelabs.com for the replacement. Cinelabs is the company that designed the original replacement for the ez-20. All others are knock-offs, in my opinion.

Edit: eventually I'll probably have to get a replacement flyback soon...mine was arcing with no apparent sparks, but stopped shortly after... I can imagine a cap kit is going to put too much stress on the fb, just like yours.

Unfortunately Chad is selling the bootleg flyback from my understanding... I'd rather make sure the dough goes where it should if at all possible.

Hate to burst your bubble there frizzybear but the "bootlegs" are manufactured by Hovee-King which also happens to be the manufacturer used by Cinelabs. ;)

I know... but since Cinelabs was the one who put the work in to it, I feel they should get some of the dough. Buying from Chad cuts Cienlabs out of the equation unfairly IMHO.

I've shot out an email at the above link. Hopefully they'll sell me one direct or steer me to someone other than AS that is selling them.

I finally had a chance to pull the 20EZ out of the cab. This is what I found:

FLYBACKSHOT1.jpg

Is the circled area normal? There is what appears to be a small hole there... and the area around the hole seems a bit melted. I am guessing that isn't normal and confirms a bad fly?
