I just bought a broken machine last night that had a known inoperative Wells Gardner 25K7191. The previous owner description was that "the light bulb had blown after he had it moved from down stairs to upstairs". At that point I determined I wasn't going to be getting much more information out of him than that.

I got the machine home plugged it in and turned it on… and CRACK! FLASH! SMOKE!… I then unplugged it promptly.

After pulling the chassis, I found that the flyback had a big hole melted through it.

My biggest fear is to replace the flyback and have the same results. Do you guys have any idea what would cause this? I am concerned that there is another problem. The ride home was a little rough, could I have damaged something in the tube or elsewhere? Are there any checks I can do to verify the tube is good? (Note: I was in my garage with the temperature being about 18 degrees F and there is no physical evidence of any other failures)

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

The original flyback's used on the K7000 series monitor are prone to failure. The failures usually start with a leak of the high voltage from the flyback and eventualy the flyback "pops" like you have experienced. Replacement parts are readily available from Bob Roberts and other sources.

I doubt that anything else was damaged but it is always a good idea to buy the whole chassis rebuild kit from Bob to ensure all of the common failure areas are addressed. At the very least you should install a cap kit while you have the chassis out of the frame.

Firing up a machine in that kind of temp is a recipe for disaster. The fly was probably weak to begin with and you were the lucky one that got to finish it off. Once the game warms up, unplug the monitor and fire it up again, if it coins up and plays with no picture, you may have skated by with just some simple monitor work.

Nah, replace the flyback ($19) and you should be good to go. If you unplugged it fast enough, you probably lost no other parts. I've had them do this before, and never even lost the HOT because I got it off in time..

although checking the hot and c36 for shorts isnt a bad idea while its apart.. DID THE FUSE BLOW?????

im not suprised it shat, thats one of the neatest failures i have seen on a k7000 fly.. whats with the brown krap?? looks like someone at some point put that in the crack to "fix" it...

And to think, I missed out on the fireworks because I was at home with the wife. Next time I'm coming over, and I'll bring popcorn for the show :D

Seriously, though, your best price on a kit is here:

http://randyfromm.com/amusements/yellowpages/zanen/

Look for item #'s 204 (cap kit), $6.95
And the Flyback: $34.95

Free shipping on orders over $25, so $41.90 out the door.

Thanks for the quick responses...

The game does play blind... the fuse didn't blow... haven't had a chance to check the HOT or C36, but will tonight. (Also... the ground prong was broken off the plug... will fix that before it sees any more action.)

Bob's Prices are less, but shipping is high... $23 for Kit + $16 shipping = $39 (for another $3 he offers the HOT and fuse). I've dealt with him before and was completely satisfied...

I'd still like to check the tube if possible... Can I take some readings to get comfortable?

Sorry, but I believe the best price on a kit is here.

Bob Roberts Deluxe Flyback rebuild kit.

Shipping is about $7 so you're looking at about $35 shipped from Bob Roberts. Bob Robert's kit also includes the HOT and a fuse.

Edit: The kit is listed for $26 not the $28 like in the picture that is posted on his website. A deluxe flyback repair kit fits in a 1lb box so it would be $7 for shipping. That's $33 shipped from Bob.

Eesh, I stand corrected! I was estimating more for Bob's shipping.

You should be fine rebuilding the chassis. Tubes don't usually go out and I haven't heard of them making flybacks explode (though I could be wrong). If you have another 25" K7000 chassis you can try out your tube with that.

Otherwise the only option you have to try to get this monitor going is to replace the bad flyback and other components prone to common failure and go from there.

I'll give it a shot... I don't have another K7000, so I'll just have to cross my figures and stand behind something thick...

Update...

smalltownguy brought over a 19" K7000 and we swapped its neck board and moved the chassis over to the 25".

Powered it up and no melt down... worked fine but as cadillacman said, image was small.

I'll be ordering a kit from Bob today...

Thanks for the help guys...

no prob. Lets hope you have better luck fixing yours then i have fixing thr one im working on right now.. stupid thing..

Got the Flyback kit from Bob Roberts... Installed and everything is working fine...

I was really worried the 1st time I had a flyback go on me. Turns out it's not really a big deal, and it happens quite often- a lot of times after a cap kit. Just replace it and you're usually good to go- if you catch it in time. Anyway glad to hear you got it working.
