i picked up a big load of parts yesterday and included were two Dick Smith kits, one flyback tester (#7205) and a transistor tester (#7218.) neither have been opened, much less put together.

for those of you who have these or similar tools, are they worth putting together and keeping? or will they just sit on my shelf taking up space? i have a feeling the transistor tester might be a bit more handy than the flyback tester but really, since i've always thought flybacks were either alive or dead i hadn't considered testing one...

dang, no advice on how helpful they are but at least three people interested in the flyback tester. must be a great piece! (haven't even decided if i'm going to get rid of it or not yet.)

I got this ring tester (flyback, coil, transformer):

http://www.anatekcorp.com/bluert.htm

I use it occasionally when I'm doing a repair and wonder whether a flyback or transformer is the problem. Works great.

If you can solder, buy the kit and put it together. if not, buy it complete.

And most DMMs can be used to test transistors...

i see the flyback tester has a scale... would it let you know if the picture is dim on a monitor because the flyback is bad instead of the tube needing a rejuve?

I dont believe so...

Chat with Dokert... he has one he uses all the time.

If I had the money, I would buy one of those "Blue Flyback" tester kits from Anatek. I could sure use one.

I've built kits lots of times before and assembling one of these testers would be a snap.
