Thanks to a friend reclaiming the scanner that they'd given me (canon lide 25), I'm in the market for a decent flatbed. It did an okay job scanning a couple manuals and some other flat up against the glass type items, but unless it was completely flat the image came out terrible. There's some small art I need to scan and I don't need to do a sideart scan in anywhere near the immediate future, but it'd be nice to find one I'd be able to do that with if the situation arises. Unless I can figure out a decent system to do so I'm probably going to take the CPO sized stuff I want to scan to kinko's in the middle of the night to find an employee to not care about copyright with their big ass scanners. I've poked around a bit online, but given that most of the stuff I'm planning on scanning at the moment is arcade related (and because I couldn't find a thread like this through search going back a ways), I figured I'd put it to you guys to see what you're using and what you recommend. I'd love to find one that worked well and only needed power from the USB port under $120ish, but I'd be happy with something that works well and isn't some hideously expensive $400 scanner.

Thoughts?

I just bought an Epson "Perfection v30" from NewEgg, ran me 50 clams and it scans up to 4800 dpi. Don't know how hi-power you need the thing to be, but this one works great for me. And yes it's the USB connection type.

Entertainingly enough, that's the exact scanner I was looking at the other night. Any idea if that would work well laid on a cabinet w/o removing the plastic beveling on the unit or if it just goes into the land of fuzzy images never to return?

I have NOS flatbed scanner, $35 shipped. Visioneer OneTouch 8600 Scanner. Yes, it is NEW still box and has the green tape tags on the scanner. I got pile of stuff from old man that lives behind me (bunch or roms too).

I have a CanoScan LiDE200 and REALLY like it. Did some tricky artwork scanning + stitching for a book last month and this scanner plus Photoshop Elements 8 was a life saver.

Forgot to mention, not looking for completely insane resolutions, I figure most art scans for repro would be fine at 600 dpi, and I doubt I'll need to scan photos or docs super high res either. The money's right on that one, how does it do scanning pressed up against the side of a cab (i.e. when the target is at the top of the bezel not up against the glass).

Same question as above, really, was any of that artwork scanning bigger than the scanner? From the mention of stitching I'm guessing yes?

I've got a HP Scanjet 4600 see through scanner:

It is totally flat and works great for scanning big items. I have scanned playfields, backglasses and other things with it. Unfortunately they don't make it anymore so you have to scour eBay or CL for one. I got mine off of CL.

I've got the window scanner too, works great, but they don't make them anymore. They pop up on eBay once in awhile for a reasonable price. I also just picked up a Mustek 11x17 scanner for under $170, so I can scan some ancient manuals for p1001 and other arcade related goodies.
