I have a Flash and I recently noticed that the upper flipper does not stay up...when you push the button it flips and immediately goes back down. The lower flipper stays up but the top does not...any thoughts? Also while trying to see if it was a connection problem I was messing around with the CPU/Driver connections. When I started the game the background sound does not come on. The game setting are set for the sound to work and it did before I touched the boards. What connection/chip did I disturb that drives this? Where should I start to get it back. Thanks, Garry

Has the 40-pin interconnect between the driver board and CPU board been replaced? It's a pain in the ass to replace, but it's a source of all kinds of problems (though, this probably isn't your flipper issue).

The issue with the upper flipper is most likely caused by the switches on the lower flipper - they might be out of adjustment or simply shot. There is one set specifically for the uppers attached to the lower to supply the power to them - replacing them would solve it.

As for the sound - if you were messing with the 40-pin interconnect and the sound went out then it appears to most likely be the cause. Replacement of the interconnect on both boards might solve this as well as any other future problems.

You may be able to get away with adjusting the end of stroke switch for the upper flipper. I would guess that when you flip the lower flipper the switch for the upper flipper closes briefly as a result of the momentum of the pawl but then opens when the lower flipper is held in the "flipped" position. This is an indicator of wear in the flipper link and you can adjust it out but you'll be better off replacing the worn flipper parts. Again... you can probably adjust things so the problem is solved but your best bet is most likely a flipper kit.

So... what I'm saying is that I think your problem is ultimately caused by a worn flipper link.

You could also have an open "hold" winding on the upper flipper but in that case I would expect the upper flipper to "flutter".
