The UDOT looks even better in person. Who did you get to do the original finish powedrcoating for the door and/or what is the manufacturer and product name?

These restorations make me feel funny, like I want to give up, but I want to at least come close.

Tips for beginners please!

These aren't really restorations, they are new games. They look awesome, but I would be curious to see what the donor cabs looked like. Were they really beyond saving ?

Thanks for sharing.

When you say "new malimine cab" does that mean that you cnc'ed a new cab based on original measurements? (the inside of the cabs is also malimine which is not original)

If so, what happened to original cab? Destroyed in copying process?

I don't doubt you're an artists at this, but if you build a whole new cab (using partly NOS and partly repros then aren't these cabs more reproductions than restorations if the actual body is whole new?) personally, I'd take a super minty reproduction over restoration.

+1 arc. i was saying that in another thread of his.. They are awsome i just dont see how they are restores also.. they are like NEW machines..

I keep some cabinets original, just haven't uploaded them yet. You guys are funny, "not restorations but reproductions". Then you compare it to classic cars. So how would you "restore" a classic cars paint job and still keep it original? Touch it up? And what if that car had decals or flames or emblems that no longer exist? Not to mention, tires, upholstery, chrome, carpet, engine, etc.

Here's how i assess whether a game gets a new cabinet.
A. What % of the artwork still intact? Is it salvagable?

B. Is it more effort and expense to cut, bondo, sand, paint or resurface than it is to build a new cabinet?

C. Does NOS or Repro artwork exist or can i make it?

So it depends on certain factors, and its not always an easy choice.

And as for the rest of the games components i just can't get myself to put old, dirty, torn, faded, badly painted, warped, scratched or rusty parts on or inside a new cabinet.
It's like a super hot girl you walk up to and then she smiles and she has teeth like Austin Powers.

I think many would consider the cabinet to be the "thing", if that makes sense (a real boardset, not a xxx-in-1 is a given). Repro art, new monitor (CRT) and new controls on an original repainted cab wouldn't elicit any of the comments.

Your restores/rebuilds are beautiful and blew me away when I saw them, but I also have appreciation for original "survivors", if that makes sense.

My Defender looked like it came out of a time machine (perhaps one with a screen door since it was cruddy ;) ). One board on the board set had been replaced, but every other piece on it still had the factory Williams stickers. I fretted for weeks on whether to replace the cigarette burned CPO because that was exactly as I remembered every Defender. Ultimately I decided to put on a repro, and I'm going to hang the original nearby as wall art.
There is no way I'd take a repro cab over that machine, but I'd have no problem with it for most of my others.

I don't think there is any right or wrong to this. Some people will always appreciate originality over perfection. This is true of every type of collectible, from bicycles to guns to cars.

Another way to compare it (if you want to keep it with cars) a car restorer would do everything in their power to maintain the doors/chassis/body but will replace motor, tranny, windows, apolstry, and everything that can be removed using screws/clips. This is considered a restore. But if you restore a car with a reproduction chassis/reproduction body and put on NOS windows, deals, chrome the car is still considered a "kit car" and is valued a lot less for car collectors (think 150,000$ restored 1960's Shelby cobra vs 30,000$ for a kit)

Mind you that you're not selling these, and you really don't (and shouldn't) care what some strangers tell you on a chat forum.. But some people are just anal about semantics. For them, when you make a cab body from new cut wood, it's not a restoration.. It's a reproduction.

Absolutely beautiful. I am inspired to lay out maximum cash to restore my machines to this same level of awesomeness!

Hey do you cut your own cabs by hand or get CNC cabs from Brett or another source?

I really am considering trying to find a Ghouls N Ghosts. Again once the wood/press board is rotten I don't think it is more valuable filled with Bondo and smelling like rot. Its just wood and not really the heart of the game. The electronics and art are the soul of the game in my opinion. An over the top restored/replaced cabinet is almost always better unless you can find a HUO original game. Would you bitch about a perfect pinball in a new built/redone cabinet with repro scoreboards, and a new play field with new plastics etc. Mint is mint even if repro parts are used where needed.

Nice Repro/Resto/Arcade Art/Whatever classified as....

........Man, your collection makes me drool all over the keyboard, LOL !!

So you gonna open your own Arcade Art Gallery or what?

You must have a massive area to keep these in. Those machines HAVE to be double spaced in order to appreciate the side art. I'm guessing your total arcade collection is well into (or passed) a five figure investment, daayumm (continued envy drooling, lol)...

Would love to see these in person at some point next time I make it down to the So Cal area. The last time I was in So Cal was 6 years ago for a family trip to Disneyland....trying to convince the wife we need to go again soon :)
