Fixed sound issues on DE "Hook", may help someone else?
Being frustrated with my current Star Wars project, I took a break to look at a nagging problem with my Hook pinball.
For a while now, as it warms up, I would get this awful noise in the left speaker and woofer.
I changed all of the Electolytic capacitors, because I thought I was having a AC coupling issue and getting DC to the speakers... Because, the woofer cooked itself... Replaced that a few months back.
Anyway, the capacitors did not help, so I started to trace the signal back.
I removed U29 (SSM2024) from the board. This is the volume control chip.. I bypassed it with 25K resistors (Pin 7 to 5, and Pin 2 to 4). Played the game for 45 min with no issues... So, looks like I have a bad SSM2024?
Nope... I reinstalled it, and all seems to be fine now. I guess it had a bad solder joint??
Anyway, I hope this helps someone else trying to track down noise issues on a DE pinball.
