Fixed some Gorf/Space zap pattern boards need a few MC14539B's

I Just got done fixing some Gorf/Space zap pattern boards and I need a few mc14539B chips. Only place I have been able to source them is eBay and they cost quite a bit any other sources I can use? I only need like 2 but would probably want like 5 to 8 just to have a few in stock.

I need other chips but for some reason these are quite difficult to find.

I also need a few MC14572UB Twistywrist is out

The 4539's are long obsolete.
If it has to be a CMOS part - use a 74HC153.
If it has any TTL interfaces - use a 74HCT153.

So that's an equivalent part then? Is there a list somewhere of equivalent matches?

No list that I know of.
Need to check the pinouts and functionality. The pinout and functionality are identical.
The 74HC153 doesn't have the wide voltage range as the old 4539 ... but you don't need that as this is used on a 5V board. The 4539 consumes a bit less power and is slower. For this, you need would need to do an indepth study... which is impractical for most of us. Just try it.

If the speed of the 4539 is slower than the 74HC153, then wouldn't using a 74LS153 work as well?

Hard to tell. You need to not only look at speed and function -- but the I/O (external interface) as well. 74LSxxx parts tend to have sloppier high and low level outputs than the 4000 series parts. And 74LSxxx parts have higher input current characteristics which can overload 4000 series parts if too many interface pins are driven. Depends on what is driving this part and what is being driven by this part. If driven or driving other 4000 series parts then you are probably better off with the 74HC153 which has similar I/O characteristics. If driven or driving 74xxx parts then you are probably better off with the 74LS153 or 74HCT153.
