Went to look at a Fisherman's Bait machine and upon power up it goes through a check sequence then stops at a point that the CD Rom will not load, I can't hear it spinning when I put my ear up to it. Can just the CD Rom be replaced? The CD itself is pretty scratched up as well which may be part of the problem too.

You can copy the disc if it's not too damaged... you can also replace the drive with a used, but good one.

If its anything like the DDR's of the day you might need to grab several IDE DVD/CD ROM drives and try them until one works.

Might be tough to find PATA CD drives these days though. At least at big box retail stores.

I check the local computer flea market for drives...

I have 4 of the DVD drives for Namco System 246 sitting on the shelf. :)

Yes, exactly like that. Very finicky... something particular about the ATAPI implementation. Like you said, you just have to keep trying drives until you find one it's happy with.

Flea market is a good idea. I've been out of system 246 drives for a long time. Good thing I don't have that many of those games left.

There's a computer recycler that I befriended who brings them. :)
