I picked up my first 'working' game today and got a fun lesson in Craigslist-ology. I have a love-hate relationship with craigslist. I love that steals can often be found on there; I hate that I'm never first in line to get them. Being a person who never has a huge arcade fund sitting around I thought I'd try something different. I've collected Star Wars stuff for years, so I threw up an ad for the whole collection with a price and said I'd consider a trade for a pin or vid. Well craigslist is an interesting commnunity. Within 20 minutes someone had posted a snarky reply post, 'I have a pile of crap I will trade for your pin or arcade', and within an hour my post was removed through flagging. This wasnt the typical "I buy games" post that goes up 10 times a day. Just a legitimate post with an offer to trade. Anyway, like I said, interesting community. Thankfully someone saw the post before it was flagged into oblivion - they offered me a very nice Defender for my Star Wars stuff, aka "pile of crap". I'm pretty excited to have my first working game, and a Defender at that. I'll throw a pic up shortly. Now if I can just get my neverending project games finished...

It looks wonderful, congratulations. Defender is a great game to own because it is so hard to master.

Eh, I am sure he traded a pile of plastic for something real. Nice upgrade. Honestly, once you arrange you Star Wars figs into a Jedi Dance Party there isn't much left for an adult to do with them. With a Defender he could, "be awesome", "think about a Multiwilliams" or "train for the world record".

Wow, nice! Looks really clean. Don't know if I could give up any of my Star Wars stuff, though..

Seriously nice trade there. I'd trade my other collections for a new cab or two any day and that one looks pretty nice. Welcome to the hobby!

Exactly, I have about 2000 comic books and I would love if someone would take them and leave me a few games.

Yeah, the Jedi dance party was over for sure. I started collecting the neo-classic stuff in the mid 90's and collected till about 2000. It was a fair trade for sure; I was sad to see some of it go but seeing my six year old hit the 'smart bomb' button on the Defender and do this sort of maniacal laugh thing eases the pain.

Somewhat unrelated question that may deserve its own thread: when is a restoration a 'bad' idea? The cab I got is in awesome shape - side art is great, CPO is great, marquee is 8/10. My only issues with the cab are it looks a little like someone repainted around the sideart in areas and there is a very small amount of water damage on the bottom of the front panel. When a cab is all original and in pretty damn good shape is it best just to leave well enough alone? I'm sure some of it comes down to personal preference, I just don't want to 'ruin' an original cab in great shape by trying to save it, if that makes sense.

Just enjoy your new game for now. Unless you are really good at the stuff some people start a resto and then the game sits forever until they give up and sell it, for much less than they paid. Also unless you totally redo the whole cab properly, strip it down and new stencils and all you'll never get more for it and make it worth less.
