Going to be starting the stencils this weekend for my Defender cab,

I have them laying flat now.

Any advise, tips, tricks or secrets that you care to share to make a first time go smoothly?

TAKE YOUR TIME.

Use tape to line the stencil up, don't try and eyeball it.

Press the edges down really good, so you don't get bleed.

Let it completely dry before you remove the stencil. Don't get to anxious.

As they say; measure twice and cut once.

Good Luck!!!!

If using latex then it needs to be removed while barely tacky or you will pull the paint up.
Test paint using tape to see how long it should set before removing tape.

2nd that on the latex. Latex can go on beautifully, but like any finish, it has its things to watch for.

Don't spray the stenciled paint layers too thickly. Remember and notice that the factory stenciled layers, though likely lacquer, are just enough to cover. In a factory setting, they would have used the bare minimum to get the job done right.

I am going to be using krylon red pepper and sun yellow
I think these are oil based, should I let it cure 24 hours and dry fully before removing the stencil or remove when its tacky?

Spray paint can pull sometimes, but I'd rather worry about pulling than taking it off when it's to wet and then scuffing it by accident. Oh, and a word from the stupid (i.e, me)...RSC1 means Right Side Color 1...dumbass me didn't realize what RS and LS meant until after my RS was on the left side!

No I haven't yet. I'm actually going to pull my Pac tonight (that didn't sound right). However, I used oil that I sprayed with Preval and I'm going to have my exacto knife close by to cut if it starts to pull.

I am worried about the yellow layer as there are more details in the yellow than the red, I want it to look nice.

Ok, so .............. how do you minimize pulling as I will be using rattle can spray paint again its red pepper and sun yellow,

Do I wait till its completely dry or pull the stencil off when its tacky?

Everyone in the know says pull it when it's tacky...dry enough so it doesn't run, but still wet enough that it doesn't pull. The only thing I would worry about would be if your coverage is enough to pull it that quickly. With regular spray paint, you'll probably be fine pulling early...just do a couple of coats a couple of minutes apart. With this Preval system I'm using, it's too fine to do that. I placed my Pac stencil and primered first (so the yellow did't alter my red), and it still took me like 6 coats to get it solid...but you shouldn't have that problem with regular spray paint.

+1000000

The first colour I applied during my last stencil job skinned over very quickly, and didn't adhere well to the base coat, so it started to peel off with the stencil even though I only let it dry for a short time. I let it dry completely and the stencil removed no problem. After that, I got a scrap piece of plywood and some masking tape and tested the other colours to see when the best time to remove the stencil was. In most cases, I had the best results removing it when the paint was just tacky, but it really depends on the type of paint, thickness, temperature, humidity, adhesion to base coat, etc. Test the paint first and you'll eliminate the guesswork.

I tried painting over tape on some scrape cardboard, no difference when I pulled it, always had a clean line with no pulling or tearing at all, no matter when.

I took the leap and painted one side and the front.

I figured what was the worst thing that could possibly happen right?

The stencil definitely came off better on the side than the front, as the front had more time to set up and dry, the side was still tacky when the stencil came off. only 2 small areas to touch up.

The front needed a few touch-ups as I had the paint pull up with the stencil in about 3 spots. It took me longer than I expected to take the side art off, probably should have done the front first.

I think by the time I'm done I'll get the hang of it.

I got the red done on my Multi Williams and only had 1 spot where I accidentally pulled the red up.
The parts that were black and were to get red paint I sprayed yellow first and then the red.
The red covered with less paint that if I used just the red alone.

Pulled mine last night as well. Even though I used oil-based, it was still very thick and rubbery. I only had one tiny pull, until I figured out how to do it. You just have to make sure you're pulling away from the painted portion, and pull very slowly. I ended up cutting away portions of the stencil as I pulled them. Patience is key!

I agree fully.... I pulled away from the paint and cut the stencil as I moved down the cab to make sure I was pulling away from the paint.
