First tempered glass explosion :-(

Had a Soldier die from plate glass. Had one of those interior doors with decorative frosted glass in it. He and the wife were having an argument and she slammed the door behind her. He put his hand up to stop the door but hit the glass instead of the wood. Slit his wrist and he bled out within minutes. Just got back from a year in Iraq too. Bad karma. I was surprised it wasn't safety glass, especially since we were in Germany.

It's surprising how strong tempered glass is from impacts to the sides but not from hits to the edge. I was cleaning out my basement yesterday and decided to get rid of my old Meteor Backglass in horrible condition. It took a heck of a whack with a ball peen hammer to break it. Much harder than I thought it would. Hammer bounced off 3 times before it finally exploded. Give me tempered over plate any day.

Allright, didn't hit anything with the glass as there was absolutely nothing for me to hit, I was standing in the middle of a room with the nearest thing to hit about 4 foot away and I had walked about 6 foot from the pin. Wasn't even wearing a belt so the buckle can't even be the culprit. There wew some chips along the edge that have been there since I got the pin (largest about the size of a quarter) so maybe I just flexed the glass just right as I was walking with it, no idea really other then it was freaky.

My plate glass comment was me just having some fun with the whole plate vs tempered thread debate. Don't get all worked up over it guys, replacement glass will be tempered.

Only wood and tile downstairs so cleanup was easy. Broom and dustpan and about 15lbs of glass rocks came up pretty easy. Thank god it's not carpet.

That there is the problem. Properly tempered glass should never chip.....especially, the size of a quarter. What ever caused that chip.....should have caused the glass to implode. Be glad an airball didn't finish it off!:)

The size or width of a quarter? I'm trying to picture a piece of glass with a piece missing the size of a quarter!

Either way when a piece of tempered glass has a chip that bad replace it immediately.

I would assume the price has a lot to do with that. Most likely not the best value for your money. I have one and it's definitely the best vacuum I've had but I'm a cheap bastard and had $100 vacuums before that. I got it as a gift and I can't say I would have bought one for myself.

In any case I'm confident it would be suitable to clean broken glass from a carpet. Unless you've got wall to wall shag carpeting like Ken's pimp pad. In that case you'd better just keep your purple gator skin loafers all up on yo feets.

Mom has a Dyson (Yellow)... I have a Hoover Wind Tunnel (8th place on the list). I like mine more... though her's does LOOK cooler...

They actually don't take in to account "price" unless you look at their "value" lists...

The worst chip was about the diameter of a quarter and the glass has been removed many times in the year that I've had the machine (many, many, many times....needed loads of repair work...) and many many airballs have smacked that glass without it breaking (just about every plunger release sends a ball smacking the glass due to the "on ramp" angle). Not sure how the chip got there (like I said, it's been there since day one of me seeing / owning it). Chip was on the back edge of the glass (farthest away from the player) about 9" from the right side (I always put the glass in the same way due to some misc scratches).

I've had tempered glass shatter in my hands too, it is a strange feeling. Mine wasn't pinball glass though, it was an advertisement for a real estate company display at the airport (the company I worked for took care of the advertising displays there). Was moving the entire display and I took out all the glass to make it lighter...one of them shattered in my hands when I pulled it out. And luckily I didn't have to pay for the replacement :)

Backglass go shatter

You're not alone!

I was sitting at my computer on a nice random day in Norfolk VA. My Twilight Zone pinball was on, as I had played it earlier. I hadn't touched it in about 2 hours. I heard a pop sound then the backglass shattered. I still find bits of the glass, even though I did my best to clean it up.

As I understand it, any chip in it will cause it to shatter, and it can do it randomly.

At first my thought was maybe an electrolytic cap popped and caused the backglass to shatter. But then I remembered the light bulb door is in the way. I replaced it with two thin pieces of plexiglass from Norva plastics. I sandwiched the translite (which was fine) in between them.

Note, when people broke into my car to steal the stereo, they jammed a screwdriver into the edge of the window frame to chip the edge of the tempered passenger window glass to cause it to shatter.

Was cleaning arcade room today, grabbed my spare "Pinball Pool" backglass and BOOM !!! exploded !!! Damn near gave me a heart attack....shop-vac took care of pieces. Was kinda freaky watching the little pieces jump around after the fact.

And they keep breaking and popping for a loooong time.

telmnstr, ouch...that sucks royally. Hey, have I met you through Matt? I know he's mentioned you, but I can't remember if we've actually met yet.
