Hi all,

this is my first restoration project, a mk1 machine.

I've owned all mk cabs some years ago, but had to sell them because we moved to an appartment, now were moving again to a house with some more space and I would like to get the cabs back. My cabs were all in good to very good shape and I guess I will never find them in that state anymore (here in Belgium) so I'm very pleased with the repro art that's out and will come out eventually...

I'm not 100% satisfied with my restoration job, but it's my first time and I know where I went wrong and it will not happen in the future...

I used the side art and box art from TOG, the cpo is from GOG witch has to make place for a TOG version when Rich is done with it :D cause this one has the wrong mesurements, I got black boarders on the sides and on the bottom. The cpo also doesn't have the part number on it and if you compare it to the original cpo, the art not as sharp.

Big mistake I made was using a sand machine to sand the cabinet... When I appied the right side the surface was not completely flat and it shows when the cab in underneath some light. :-( I tried to rescue the other side by sanding it manually before I put on the left sideart and it came out much better!
Same thing with the front of the cabinet where the coin door is. I put on black vinyl from TOG. When you take a look at the pics it seems like there are air bubbles in it, but it's not, the surface was just not flat... Thinkin of re-doing the front again, I ordered some spare vinyl for next restorations.

Some other things i've done is a capkit for the WG7000, replaced the y-unit game pcb with a T-unit, Painted the back of the cab, new T-molding, new buttons/joysticks/switches and I put on a lexan overlay on top of the cpo (i know it's not like the orinial cabs, but I just think it looks nicer this way :) ) and some regular cleanup...

Here's a before and after shot:

These are the pics I've taken througout the restoration:

There are still some things I want to do to the cab, some re-wiring and some stickers like the midway "warranty void if removed" ones. A new instruction card would be nice too...

The next project will be my mk3 machine or maybe a mk2/mk4 if I ever find one at an affordable price ;-)

nice job!, I too am patiently waiting rich's cpo.

Also i was so worried when pulling the vinyl off the front of my KI but had no major issues, definitely needed to sand it after as it pulled up lots of the grain.

unfortunately your link to the extra pics doesn't work :(

Thanks :)

Did you use a heat gun to remove the vinyl? It went of pretty easy here with a heatgun, only left a buch of glue witch eventually came of while sanding.

yup good working link. some amazing pictures, you did a fantastic job.

did you make this metal plate or... well... damn how did you get it so clean? I had to use a wire wheel on my last one, which removed a lot of the surface coating.

I used a buch of aceton to get the job done but yeah it took me 2 hours to get it that clean :D the aceton ate the glue/paint away and I had to scrape it off, but I had to go over it a few times till it was all gone.
I was a little high on the aceton when I was done :p

mine was already partially removed, and covered with another overlay :( (some camo green/brown leaf pattern). I've had better luck with old williams wood panels lately (probably just need more practice lol).

I had an mk1 for about a month....never had a chance to restore as I had to flip it to get my edot. But I miss it already....that game is what got me interested in martial arts....now I am a full time instructor... :p. So my point is...don't let it go too easy!

I agree with you abou the GoG Cpo. It looks blurry and the it's not sized right.unfortunately, I bought the control panel box art too from them right before Rich released his. Now I have 4 crap pieces of art from them and about $40 in the crapper.

Your cabinet looks great by the way! Another one to add the MK warriors shrine!
