I was thinking about getting a first pin, and I like the looks of DMD ones (who doesn't) but my budget was about $1000.

Any ideas as to what titles I should look for? I usually like space themes or movie themes but I fear I will not be able to find anything in my range....
Any thoughts?

there are many dmd games out there that can be had for $1,000 dollars in good working condition. some that come to mind are lethal weapon 3,royal rumble, teenage mutant ninja turtles, hook, congo, popeye, hurricane, the getaway high speed 2. i even saw a terminator 2 in working condition go for $1,000 about 4 months ago. just be patient and check with local route ops, craigslist, and members here. you should have no problem picking up a pin you will like soon.

Highly recommend Starship Troopers, which you may find for that price. Also Last Action Hero. Lost World:JP is a fun and tough game, not incredibly deep and not as much fun for a casual player perhaps, but a real "shooter's" game. Probably a few more Data East games that you might find for about $1k that are very fun.

I picked up a Jurassic park (DE) with no problems other than a little dirt for under $1000.

You will be able to get something. Just take your time.

Sega pins

At 1k all your gonna find are sega pins or beat to shit Williams system 11s.. May find a few data easts, but those can be a nightmare.. Sega pins are a lot of pin for the $$$$! I've got a ID and have played batman forever, starship troopers, and others.. Good value!

This may have been true as little as a year or two ago, but not right now, not in the majority of major regional markets. You may find DMD games for ~$1000 if you have patience, but High Speed 2 and Congo (and T2 for that matter) will not be among them unless they are in extreme project status, or someone owes you a favor, or both.

If you increase your budget to $1500 you will increase your options quite a bit.
Otherwise, at around $1000, select Data East and Sega titles will be your best bet.

I don't want to sound discouraging, but I don't want to see someone get their hopes up based on a false picture of the market. DMD pin prices have risen dramatically over the past 1-2 years. Those who have not been actively shopping for DMD pins over the past year don't seem to realize this.

Gottlieb system 3 titles. Picked up my Tee'd off for $775 a couple months ago. I know NGG is better but bang for the buck Tee'd off is a great game with a lot of stuff going on.

I will put in a vote for system 3 titles as well. I picked up my Wipeout for $825. Not a very deep game but a fun game that anybody that comes over will give a few games to. A couples of ramps and a bunch of targets to shoot at and the ski lift in the back is a really fun novelty to watch. Plays completely different from my Pinbot, so the 2 will keep me going for quite a while when I get the chance to turn them on.

Wow! Not a game on my must have list, but for that price, I would not have hesitated to give it a try.

Eek! No! I had the displeasure of playing Rescue 911 in a weekly league back in the day. Calling it a turd would be insulting to poop.

Keep your eyes open for deals. I got a fully-working LAH with excellent pf for well under $1k this past spring. Did a flipper rebuild because one coil was hacked, even though it worked fine. Total cost with the few new parts was still well under $1k and that game is packed with a TON of features.

Data East pins can usually be found fairly cheap. I think all of the Data East pins are underrated, especially when you conisder how much bang you get for your buck.

Strongly agree here. I think it's funny that many people seem to think that only Tommy is a 'good' DE game, and then get absorbed by games like WWF, LAH, etc. I hope a TFTC crosses my path someday.

I sold a very good working Rescue 911 for $475

Best 475 I've ever spent, as far as pins go anyway. Decent game too, I know some people find it repetitive, but it is entertaining and all non-pin people love it. In good shape they can be had under 1,000. There will be haters for every game out there.

Bookmarking this post for after the holidays. My initial aim was to get a cheap EM but I'm now leaning towards saving up some cash and getting a DMD. $1,000 sounds about right for me too.

Yeah I don't need a 'expert's pin' I'm looking for casual players here, so I'm thinking I should be ok. I just don't want to be up to my elbows fixing the dang thing every other month.

Oh, and since I'm a pin virgin, some of these acronymns are over my head, what is LAH? etc....

Was that Rescue 911 pin the one that had problems with the Helicopter? I saw that listed on CL I think.

The only real "problem" was the original friction wheel on the helicopter was missing so it didn't spin as it was supposed to, that and one of the coupling on the helicopter mechanism was missing. Other than that, the usual, cleaning, rubbers, bulbs and a couple of new switches, and now it works awesome. Like I said, despite the haters, I do enjoy playing it as does anyone who stops by.
