Help me win an argument with my coworkers here.
Although Tron was an early video game-related movie, I have heard a lot of people say the horrendous Mario Brothers piece of garbage with Bob Hoskins was the first movie directly based on a specific video game.
But shouldn't Death Race 2000 be considered the first?

I think the problem is whether the movie is based on the game, or the game is based on the movie. As Death Race 2000 (the movie) was released in 1975, and the game Death Race was released in 1976, then it can't be the first. JAWS also had a game come out about the same time (Shark JAWS), but was based on the movie...

Any Tron fans out there correct me if I'm wrong, but the game came out around the same time that the movie did.Not sure what the first movie was that was based on a video game, but I'm pretty sure it isn't Tron as the Tron arcade game was probably produced concurrently with the release of the movie.Maybe wiki or imdb.com can help.

The Last Starfighter (1984).

Ok, it wasn't a released video game but the movie was based on a video game.....:D

Cloak & Dagger (1984)

The video game which is central to the movie had already been in development as production of the film began (the game then named "Agent X"); when Atari was consulted to provide a game as an element of the movie, they tweaked "Agent X" and renamed it Cloak & Dagger. Dabney Coleman's character was then named "Agent X" in the movie. The game saw limited arcade release.

You could say tron for this reason....

the game has the spider level, which (barely) made an appearance in the movie.
I will contend it was to be relevant to the game play.

lemme correct you. The "game" came out around the same time that the movie did.

is that right? or did you mean

The "movie" came out around the same time that the game did.

Krull. The video game was released in February 1983 and the movie didn't debut until July 29, 1983.

First movie based on a specific game is SMB.

Tron, Krull, Star Trek, WarGames, etc., are all games based on movies.

Cloak & Dagger is something of a gray area. It's really more of a collaborative marketing afterthought. In the movie, Jack Flack and the kid from ET never went into buildings filled with robots and acid to set off bombs. :) But technically you could still say that it was at least loosely "based on" the game, despite all the glaring disparity.

star trek the game was based on the tv series, star trek 2 wrath of khan was based on the game

Wrath of Khan was based on an episode from TOS, so if the game has Khan, it's also a copy of that episode - so the movie can't be based on the game...
