First game you bought and when

Dragon Spirit $200

Really wanted to get my favorite game from College, Atari (Namco) Dragon Spirit. Still love the music from that game, it's amazing.

In 1994, found one in 10 minutes on the newsgroups in NJ (!). You can tell this was a long time ago, when getting a "grail" took 10 minutes of searching on the internet, and you only paid $200 for it.

Had to get rid of it on a move. So, so regretting it.

Was in A- condition, haven't seen one since :(.

Bought more after that, and really enjoy repairing and restoring them. Great hobby, if you have the space and an understanding spouse :)

About 1994 I went into our local arcade at the mall (we went there a lot) and in the back of the arcade there were a couple games for sale. One was Double Dribble... for 80 bucks. It was still operating and taking quarters, I talked my dad into letting us buy it, he showed up with his van and we took it home. I later figured out it was a Dragons Lair, that had been kitted into a Double Dribble.

Very fun game, by the way.

Mike Munves Satellite Tracker arcade game for $10 at an auction sometime in the late 1970's. Next one after that was Gottlieb Rollercoaster (now RIP) for $200. First game I had was a United Super Shuffle Alley my dad brought home from Hersheypark in 1972, but I didn't buy that. Lots more since then.....

Drove 3hrs out to a city for work, my brother happened to spot a Mortal Kombat 2 for sale 20 minutes from my location. Drove out to the middle of nowhere, guy wanted 800 for it. Buttons were stuck and it had some light water damage on the bottom.

I struggled to move on it, called my brother who convinced me even if I had buyer's remorse I could turn around and sell it since people were hunting for those cabs (even sent me WTB links to show its value.) Talked the guy down to 600 and loaded it up, been the best purchase I've ever made and I was hooked. 6 cabs later I'm addicted and wouldn't hesitate again to snag another cab at such a great price.

On 10/26/2019 I Drove 4 1/2 hours from Detroit to Chicago to buy an original fully restored Donkey Kong. We have VW GTI's so I had to rent a truck. LOL! Was pouring rain the whole way back but at least I was able to listen to Michigan beating Notre Dame. Anyway this DK unit is sick and I can't wait to collect more. Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, Tempest & Frogger are in the near future.

Picked up 2 Atari Star Wars games in 1987 (possibly 88?) for $150. One working one not. Shortly there after I picked up a Black Knight pinball and a MH (board) and it kinda took off after that with a small hiatus during college.

My first cab was an upright PAC-MAN purchased in 1999. I'm in England, It was located in Barry Island in Wales advertised for sale in a 'Free Ads' paper, the days before I discovered the internet. A 2 hour trip and there it was! It was filthy but cleaned up well and worked! My life changed from that day!! Next came Defender etc, etc

time killers

Picked it up for $125 it is having issues now so it may not be time killers for much longer...

Initial D V3 Twin Cab

Picked this up from a guy not too far from me. The slave cabinet has some issues ( no sound, have a new amp coming. it was damaged, the head to head link didn't work. haven't tried to fix that yet. and the card reader was "broken" but that seems to work just fine.)but I have them all cleaned up and am working through the issues. I have definitely caught the bug as I picked up an Outrun cabaret cabinet not a month later...

Mortal Kombat bought for $150 on eBay in Virginia probably around 2005 or so. No chassis. Bought a Wei Ya chassis and everything works. Still in my collection, still working today.

centipede cocktail bought it around 2001 to use as a test rig for board repair. it is still all original and i know who owns it . i have thought about buying it back someday

Defender

Bought a Defender upright in 1985 for $25 at a vendor's auction that was getting rid of "older" games that weren't making much money anymore. Had bought a Gravitar for $45 but when my dad and I came back with his van to pick it up they said it had already been sold, but you can have one of these other games for $25...which is why I chose the Defender. I think they thought we weren't coming back to pay for it.

Nov 13 2019 bought my Time Pilot kit in a Vanguard cab for $20. And 2 hours late for work to go pick it up. It is rough and didn't work. It was used as a prop in an escape room place. After getting home I had it working in no time. All of the leaf switches where horribly mangled.

Tempest in 1990/91. Guy at work was selling his. My friends told me before he listed it in the newspaper (!). Don't remember what I paid. Still have it.

I love all of the classic usernames in this thread. No clue how I hadn't already posted in here, but mine was a working Asteroids in a friend's garage for $50 in 2005. The rest, is history..
