I went to look at a neighbor's pinball machine that wasn't working. Main error was that none of the balls would release, and it makes an odd noise upon startup. I went through some diagnostics, and after about five minutes, I could smell smoke, so I turned it off. I turned it on again, and nothing changed.

What could be wrong that is preventing the balls from releasing? The flippers work fine, and so do the display and solenoids.

sound like the outhole kicker solinoid may be stuck thats the noise you here and fryed that would be the smoke . this can be from a bad transistor on the solinoid board.look at the coil and see if its fryed or stuck on if so you may have to replace the resistor and the coil

Okay, a couple questions. Where is the coil? How do I check if it's fried? Where can I find the coil/transistor? Where is the solenoid board?
