Finally finished the Mad Planets :)
Took a lot of work, well.. Mostly a lot of waiting (for parts) and replacing the control panel overlay was a complete nightmare. Probably the worst overlay removal ive ever encountered.

here is what I had to do:

* Bought the game in Florida, shipped to me by my oldschool friend Jason Cody.
* Recap the monitor
* Replaced the 4108 chips on the CPU.
* Rebuilt the Power Supply
* Touched up the cold solder on the filter board.
* Was Missing joystick, so I had to replace it. (thanks to ebay)
* Replaced Joystick Base/Housing (thanks to Warren Conard)
* Purchased the Gottlieb Logo piece. (thanks CMoore)
* Made new bezel
* Replaced the Overlay (Thanks to Mylstar)
* Replaced the Opto's on the Spinner
* Replaced the Spinner Board (next to the CPU)
* Replaced the Marquee (thanks to Mark Hooks)
* Replaced the Bulb & starter
* Had the Sound board rebuilt (thanks to Troy Akey).
* Had to remove some black spray off the sides.

I love it, dude.

Hey, the trigger on my Mad Planets doesn't always give me shots fired. I figure it is a little spring in the trigger that needs replaced. Would that be a correct diagnosis? And forgive me if that is a dumb question, I'm a noob at repair and replace.

Nice... That CPO is horrible. My wife asked me why I wasn't removing it out in the garage with a respirator on!!! I just pealed it off with no chemicals. Then I used water based stripper on the adhesive for a few hours!

What a mess! What a stinky PITA mess!

"* Replaced the Opto's on the Spinner"

Where did you get the Opto's?

There is a small "leaf" switch in there... Could be dirty! or the wires could be loose or cut. It "could" be the spring as well.

...

Used the optos from a Midway Game (like Tron).

I actually used a razor blade to remove the overlay an inch at a time. Took me 2 days (no joke) to remove it. Then I used acetone and a razor blade to remove most of the adhesive, followed by a sand blaster.
Turned out great, but F*CK that panel.

I should dig up the pics of mine to display. I sort of lucked into a real nice one at a fairly decent price ($600). Works great, aside from fire button sticks a tad, but that occurred months after I bought it and I think it could be easily fixed.

Edit to add: Actually, I think I paid $400. Or $450.

Its just a spring and a button. Open the joystick and adjust it. I even shot some WD-40 on mine to make it easier to press.

nice row!

Looks good man. Gottlieb sounds/speech are the best for sure. The object movement is also supreme to most games of the time. I took a similar pic yesterday but it was with my phone so it looks like crap. :eek:
