Finding Games At The Dump

I seem to remember 1 post with pics where someone here saved a game from the dump. I believe it may have been a lunar lander.

I saved a lunar lander cab off Jim hills loading dock. He was going to crush it and toss it into his dumpster... I should have the 2 exidy vertigo cockpits that were on the same dock that he did crush..

All these lines.

All these "I did"

I've read posts from people saying they found games at their local garbage dump. I've never been to a dump before, do they actually sort through things like arcade cabinets and pinball games? If not, how do you go about finding them, or is it not even worth trying?

I havent had the privelidge but my friends dad works for one.

He has everything from a slightly melted but fullt working $3500 miller welder that was totalled by ins after a fire, to a whole load of ciggys/pop/chips that has to be tossed due to a convience store fire ( even though the fire was int he back of the store lol) to brand new drills form factories that were tossed, also tons and tons of 3m stuff. Theres a packaging facility that uses that dump. WHen they are done packaging stuff for the day, any leftovers gets TRASHED black tape masking tape post it notes swiffers, etc

Hello people, open a small factory outlet!!!

Yup!!

+1. I don't get it on a couple levels though..
companies being "green" and yet you see this..
yea, there is a tax write off for "destroyed" Merch. but why?.. I think thats one of those things that they end up there because some shmuck may end suing because they didnt see
the warning label on the wrong side etc...
I remember a target in HB donated to a local savation army, Used to get GREAT deals..
then due to litigation risk they don't anymore.. sucks.. used to get some great stuff there..

This is why I wish i knew and would support more "SCRAP" yards which will let you dig and buy!.. Hell traffic lights etc controllers end up there all the time. Not because their bad or non functional but because "the new standard" etc..

Its retarded how much useable stuff ends up dumped and yet the company gets the "write off" and A LOT of us would use stuff with a blemish etc.

I've been waiting to see Mr Salvage's response.. :)

Billy works at an auto parts junkyard.

I remember when we were kids we would scavenge through the mound of trash and bring home all kinds of cool stuff. Picture joe dirt digging through a trash can and it will be about the same thing. I dont think my parents ever bought us bicycles, we just fixed up other peoples junk.
Now they wont let you take anything from the landfill because of liability. Stupid world is geared for idiots these days. God forbid anyone have to use common sense.

Junkyard no... Auto Recycler yep... lmao

Also I have my own personal video game junkyard right here at my house because I have a friend in the burg (cough cough djdns) that sells me all his beat up shit at a fair price.

Which is my speed by the way! I just can't spend the money you guys do on games anymore since child support hit for the third time. I am a grandpa still paying child support myself with only 8 more years to go on the youngest. I have paid two off so far.

No wonder I can't buy no fricken parts for my babies...

Guess it depends where you live. If it's a rural area you probably have to go to the dump, if it's a suburb the township deals with all the trash.
Had a friend in Iowa that had to save all there trash ( that they couldn't burn) and take it to the dump.

But also, I got a working Gorf, that was going to be trashed. Had another friend was making a delivery to a hospital or something and there was a game sitting on the loading dock whith a sign that said "trash". He asked if he could take it since he knew someone that collected games.
The dock guys said sure, but why would anyone want it since it was not working and trash.
I only needed to adjust the horizontal hold on the monitor.

A friend of mine found a Dig Dug at the dump (solid waste dropoff site). The cab was messed up, but he pulled the monitor, bezel, CP, and boards.

I sold most of it on ebay and split it with him.

He's not into the games, but he's been on several runs with me. I taught him right!

I've also got pics of games in a construction dumpster that were being cleared from a warehouse. They were leftovers after two guys I know bought them out.

I got plenty of decent parts and stuff that were ebay'ed back in the big MAME cabinet days. Did you know you used to be able to sell a over/under coin door for about $50?

The whole 'green' movement is bullshit, designed to make money. It works great. Think about it. Recycled material is more expensive than original material. Why is that? ... because the whole point of the thing is to make some cash. They have people actually believing that the world is in trouble, and just like Superman, YOU CAN SAVE THE PLANET! It's like comic book stuff.

Anybody that preaches living green (on t.v., etc.) wastes more electricity in 1 week than I do in a year... yet they're o.k. because they pay some poor guy in Africa to plant a bunch of trees. It's the most rediculous thing I've ever seen in my life.

Save the forests! Even though we specifically planted them to be cut down for wood and paper. Don't throw away Plastic! ... because it'll never rot. It's made from oil, which also never rots, lol. Plastic is toxic!.... but yet so is the oil it came from.

It's not like we're polluting the planet with stuff from outerspace or another planet, it's all native to earth. Even man made materials are made with natural, 'organic' elements! EVERYTHING IS ORGANIC!

I dont' even so much as litter; I save everything I can, I never part games or throw away anything of value... so I'm not promoting pollution. I'm just saying the whole green movement is fake, don't fall for the hype!

BTW if anybody is big into the green movement I'm not saying you're an idiot, I'm just saying the people on a national level promoting this stuff are doing it for the cash.

It was Sentient that found it.

That was f'ing awesome!
Hey guys....yup.. That was a nice score for sure! I do still have it but still havnt gotten it working...powersupply is rebuilt....boardset is the problem. Its frustrating seeing as how the guy who rebuilt my StarTrek boardset can't fix this board. So off to ElectronForge it goes...I'll start a new thread on the project once it's working.....

I found a Defender sitting on the curb waiting to be taken by the trashman. Does that count?

An actual landfill is much different than a drop off site. The landfill will have a certain section that is being filled at one time(could be multiple areas depending on size of landfill). Trucks are constantly coming in and unloading. The trash is then bulldozed and buried within minutes.

Like others already stated, the public cannot walk around and go through the trash.

Finding Games At The Dump.

A friend of mine (not on the forum) found these at a dump in Lake George, New York.

They still had the circuit boards in them too! :)
