I've read posts from people saying they found games at their local garbage dump. I've never been to a dump before, do they actually sort through things like arcade cabinets and pinball games? If not, how do you go about finding them, or is it not even worth trying?

I think people exaggerate. I have yet to see a photo of folks wheeling games from a dump. That's tooth fairy talk.

At least where I am, you can't just go to the dump and poke around.

I did find my 1st Asteroids upright next to a dumpster. A bar had tossed it out and my roommate spotted it. It had been out there for a day or 2, I asked the bouncer guy, and he said - take it, it would save him a trip to the dump. Resoldering connector pins on the deflection board fixed it.

It's kinda like the old rule.. When a girl says she's sleep with 3 guys, you multiply that amount by 3. When its a guy, divide by two.

Same thing with game collectors.. They say they paid 75$ for a rare grail? add a zero

I know here they have a "Transfer Station & Recycling Center" specifically for electronics and appliances. Sounds like just the sort of place you'd find tossed games. No idea if it's open to the public though.

I just recently went through a bunch of games that were destined for the dump. But I guess that doesnt really count. BUT, in the long run, I got a free Super Chexx and Slugfest. :)

In CA and ID at least it's against the law to poke through the dump. See... people throw away credit card info, etc...

Found a Centipede at a friends scrap yard. I tried to get it working but no go. I ended up putting in a Atari 2600 in it and later burning it. No idea how long it sat outside. I got 20 bucks for the board untested/nwing. Guy didn't leave me feedback so I take it it didn't work.

when matt was closing the supercade in stockton, I happened across him while he was loading games to take them to the dump. I don't know what he ws planing on taking from the warehouse to the dump, but I bought all the games in the warehouse(about 75 games).. He even let me keep the games in there for 2 or 3 weeks until the rent was due..

my playchoice was in the back of a pick up and on its way to the dump, some workers at a mini storage place were cleaning out units and it was in there. brought it home cleaned it up tinkered with some settings on the monitor its been working ever since. it was loaded with 10 games :)

And I sold a shitload of SFII cabs.. I thought the were cool. 19" cabs with 6 buttons on both sides of the joysticks. It was mostly fighting game stuff. But there were a few pins too. data east time machine, road kings, and I think a pinbot.

I also got a few rowe bc25 changers too. Traded 1 of them for an earthshaker pinball..

I seem to remember 1 post with pics where someone here saved a game from the dump. I believe it may have been a lunar lander.

I found a crazy kong cocktail at a scrap yard back when i was a scrap hauler, they weighed it and charged me it's scrap value like 6 bucks. They were nice and helped me cram it through the front seat and into the sleeper in my volvo truck,a nightmare.
This was back in 2000,wish i had kept that thing.Ugly as hell, but once working it was a great game.
