Finding a proper replacement transformer (explanation needed)

I'm looking to replace a transformer that has the following specs:

120v AC Power in to transformer.. transformer with 3 leads out to 36 VAC, 36 VCT and 36 VAC . This is for a California Speed. The rectifier is rated at 6 amps and there are two fuses on the board at 3amps each, however I have no spec for the amps on the transformer itself. Does anyone know the amp rating on that supply?

That being said, does anyone know where I could find a suitable replacement? (the original one also had 3 outputs of 22VAC, 22VCT, 22VAC for a total of 6 leads coming out of the transformer but the additional leads are for the subwoofer board, which I don't have anyway)

And, I think I understand volts center tapped as I will get a measurement of 36VAC across the outer two taps, but the center pole to an outer tap will only give me a measurement of 18VAC, can someone verify this?

Thanks,

-tom

You might be able to get one from Happ or Betson, if you have the part number from the manual....but be prepared to pay a premium.

To find a suitable replacement you need to know the power requirements of the transformer. It will either be specified as the amperage at the secondary voltage (e.g. "36VAC-5A") or the input or output power (expressed in VA, e.g. "180VA output").
Picking one with a greater power handling capacity is OK, of course. Select an underpowered one and you may have a meltdown.

To answer your other question regarding the vct (center tap) - you are 100% correct. Since its AC out of a transformer, its 36 volts across the outer posts and 18v from the center to either outside post.
