Capped a Nintendo chassis today, and when I had the monitor out to test it I reached back to adjust the RGB on the neck board. I have no clue what I touched, but got the shit shocked out of me (and the monitor reset to boot). I have a nice little cluster of red dots burned into my forearm, heh. Holy shit it woke me up.

At least I'm not scared of monitors anymore

Time for a drink...

Aw man, sorry to hear that Joe. I'm just waiting for that to happen to me someday so I can just get it over with. It's bound to happen.

Which game were you capping for?

Capped my Mario Bros monitor. I need a Horz Width Coil adj tool though, cause the screen got thin on me. Looks way better than it did though and the sound pots are fixed so I have volume again

yep,
Great feeling isnt it!! I got mine about a year ago on my tron. was trying to adjust the monitor with the top door on from reaching underneath. apparently the top door is there so you DONT grab the neckboard like i did!
PHEW! knocked the shit out of me and I could smell flesh.
so the Tron top door comes off now - :D:rolleyes:

Well I'm gonna be capping my Frogger in about a week, (my first cap kit so far) and reading this thread made me feel a lot better about doing it!

*100 posts, woohoo!*

Awesome!!! Kidding - actually its good to read these types of stories since its east to become complacent. I'd capped my 19" monitors, always discharging, but never really knowing if it was necessary. Just yesterday I discharged the 25" 720 monitor and for the first time saw and heard a good spark. Just before I reached in to re-attach the anode cap, I recalled that the tubes can build up a charge after being discharged, just for the heck of it I again touched my screwdriver to the empty hole in the tube; again there was a huge blue spark.

We are all so worried about discharging before doing a cap kit, but we all end up getting shocked while adjusting. I got shocked almost everytime I tried to adjust my Space Invaders. I am starting to learn to use all of those cool little plastic adjusting tools I bought. I still try to rush once in a while though. Oops.

I was prepared for a big shock when I discharged my sanyo for the 1st time. It was only a small pop, so it made me feel a lot more confident. Anyway during the course of it being out of the cab for a few days, it built up a charge, and it gave me a small static shock when I put my hand near the opening.

While adjusting color push the other day, I got a small snap, but nothing that really hurt. In a week or two I'll have to discharge it again to replace some pots, and a suspect cap, but I think I'm better prepared now.

Ahhhh I remember when I did that. Grabbed the neck board and pushed it from the solder side with my fingers while the game was ON! Dammit, well I wanted to see if that would fix the Galaxian so I could get a few games in. Nothing compared to the shock, the horrid stench of burning flesh, and the pin holes burned into my index finger. I had around 4 or so holes which were from the solder side sticking into my skin.

good times.

Glad to hear your monitor hymen is gone Jow..... Carry on and be the CRT slut you've always wanted to be.

Yeah, me too. Got mine from a 33" Dungeons & Dragons, tried to get to the monitor board with limited access while it was still connected to the tube to get a value on a cap without discharging the big a$$ tube first....yeah.

But the worst one I ever got was grounding out while not paying attention and grabbing onto a flourescent fixture socket (8 ft.) while standing on a stainless steel freezer working at a Haagen-Dazs. I actually felt my hair stand up on that one...this COULD explain a few things...

I was screwing around with a giant Cruisin USA sign today with neon lights which only half worked. Well long story short I got out my stupid multimeter and before I knew it I had a shot of electricity shoot out of damn knuckle!!!! Smelled like burning hairs. So I looked at the thick electrical wires from the neon transformer and had no idea they run 15000 volts!!!

Learned a BIG lesson today!

Oh man that sucks. You know it was a good one when you get that weird electric after-taste in your mouth. Like golden showers from C-3PO or something.

My first was from a 25" TV tube in my XBOX cab. I had discharged it, unhooked everything, but then (like an idiot) managed to place my finger in the hole while setting it in the cab. Try placing a 25" bohemoth into the cab while getting that shock, not fun.

Firt time I got rapped I was working on a 19" WG 4900. Local guy told me how to take it out to service it. I grabbed right on to the neck board. Had burnt dots on my hand, burnt flesh smell...fried hair. Smelled like I just had someone creamated.

Hurt like hell too.

Lesson learned. If you don't know what you are doing, don't screw with it.
