Over a year and a half ago, I set my high score in Donkey Kong at 298,200. I was SO close to 300K, but didn't hit it. I haven't been able to get close to that score at all since then. I took some time off from playing it because I was burning out.

Well, since tomorrow I am going to be playing some DK with Dr. Galaga, I thought I'd better warm up. Played one game this morning. I only hit 92K on the first man, then I died twice on a barrel level at 140K. My last guy I made it over 300K finally. I was getting really nervous once I hit about 250K, and my hands were shaking at 280K. Still, I hit the milestone (barely) with a score of 300,600!

Oh, and I was so excited to hit the score that I ran upstairs to get my camera. Once I hit the top of the stairs I remembered I didn't enter my initials in yet. I ran down but didn't enter them quick enough before time ran out. Crap, now I have to beat it 5 times to fix that screw-up!

Great score. I maxed out around 132,000 before I sold my DK. Didn't play it enough to really bring my game skills to the next level. Really need to reacquire my all time favorite game and work on my score. Note to future self-Getting rid of a game you love solely because someone offers you near 5 times what you paid for it ($500 vs. $100 plus $10 cap kit) is not a good reason. Sure I was trying to validate my hobby to friends and family by claiming its profitibility(true only in this one instance but overall completely false), but 3 years later I still have strong sellers regret.

I made the same mistake with my first Tron. Bought it for $65 and sold it for $475. Regretted it ever since. Thankfully I got another Tron last year!

Nice job Jeff! I really need to start playing again so I can try to catch up. Please post the pic in the DK group at COSP so there is a record of it, and I will update your score. This will put the top 12 scores over 300k; pretty impressive, I think. Before King of Kong was released, I don't think there were that many scores over 300 at TG. I remember noting that my old score of 250k would have put me at #15 back then.

Well at least I didn't make the same mistake with Tron. Paid $350 for it and a broken Krull. Invested a little over $500 in parts to rebuild power supply, replace all electolytic caps, buy working boardset, all new lights and get them working, new blacklight plastics, cpo, sideart, bezel art, inner side art, kick plate, locks, flightstick parts, etc. Looked and played awesome under the blacklights. Needed money last year. Understated condition a little on ebay listing and almost broke even using my standard labor rate of 10 cents/hour at 50 to 60 hours. At least I got the krull up and running and it's still in my collection taking up my limited space. Its almost as fun and cool looking as Tron, right?

O.k., maybe 80 to 90 hours if you include headscratching time.

I hit 300K last summer just got 521K about 2 weeks ago looking for 600K by end of year.

Going from a high score of around 300k to well over 500k and maybe 600K would require approximately how many additional hours of game play? I'm actually curious what the walls are for people this good and the large difference between high score and #2 score. For me I hit wall around 90k or so and was stuck for a long time. Then one day jumped to around 126k-128k. Last stuck with high score of I think either 130,825 or 132,825?

Actually, I don't think the score could have ended with a 5.

I think about 40 - 50 min extra play I think

Congrats on breaking 300K! I've done it twice not far apart in late 2008, but haven't come close since. And speaking of your Tron, does it still have my high score on it? :D

Oh, and Vicjw66, a DK score can't end in anything except 00 (other than the default 7650 high score). There's no point awards that aren't a multiple of 100.

That was my next question. But what I meant and did not articulate clearly was, How much total time or games played (loose approx) was spent over that period to go from a 300K player to a 5ook-600k player? ex.- about 2 hours or 2 games a night ave. over a summer, year etc. Were there score ranges where you hit walls that took you extra long to get past? ex. with me I was stuck around 80-90k range then one day broke through to 126k-128k range never got past 130-132k. It looks like you were in the zone when you got the top score smashing the previous ones. Its been more than 3 years since I've had DK and briefly forgot the impossibility of scores that don't end in 0. I can't remember my exact high but between 130k-132k. I quickly edited my post a few minutes later.

Looks like I know what I am doing tomorrow ...

I am still stuck in the 215k range.

Congrats on breaking the 300k barrier - I know exactly what you mean about the hands shaking from nerves. You'd think we were still 10 years old ... LOL.

Well I play a couple or 3 games a week over the last year or so. I was a real good DK player in high school 82-86 High score was 220K. When I got my DK JR 4 years ago I put a Mikes Arcade Double Donkey Kong kit in it and thats when I started playing again I still remembered most of my patterns ( strategies) and really got serious last summer about getting better. The Barrels and the elevators are the easiest to me. The rivets and pie factory are difficult but if your patient they can be beaten. Once you get to level 5 all the screens are the same as far as difficulty from what I've seen.
