I finally beat the high score on my centipede machine! Well it did take me a month or 2 but I finally beat the high score that was on my centipede machine. The high score used to be 167,xxx by RIC (whoever that is) but the other day I beat it by a mere 1,000 points. Granted the game is set to easy with 5 guys to start with and a extra guy every 10k but still I am pretty pumped that I had beaten this score which may have been set way back sometime in the good ole 80's. I wonder how long that score had been on this machine? RIC is still #2 though and I have the third slot at 135,xxx. My goal is to push off this RIC guy off the board. :) How is everyone else at centipede? Any other stories about beating high scores on your own personal machines?

You're lucky... my centipede came with scores 200-210k... took me about 2 years to break the 180k, all heads barrier (3 times) to wipe them off the list...

My Centipede high score is only 68K. Its a great score for me, though. I had gotten 3rd place on my Asteroids Deluxe(it holds the top 3); then Jim(YodaInMn) came over and wiped me off the board.

I remember it taking a few weeks to beat the score on my AsteroidsDeluxe when I got it. Funny thing is I let Zfcamaro borrow it for an arcade party he had shortly later and when I got it back he had beaten my score....

At least it only keeps the top 3. My brother put ASS on some of the records on my T&F and also got into my top 20. It took months to knock him out of my top 100.

My Cetipede was not set to save scores when I got it so I never had anything to push for.

you can...

You can reset the high score list and I was going to do that but then I thought what would be the fun in doing that. :) Actually when I first started playing the game 2 months ago I was not to good at it and the best i could do was maybe 50K. At the time I was thinking there is no way I am going to be able to beat the 166k that is the high score. The guy i bought it from had the #2 and the #3 slot and his scores were 67 and 68K. After I broke that score I was thinking the same thing there is no way I am ever going to beat 166k and make it in the #1 slot. I was going to reset the board but I wanted to keep that score up just in case it had been on the board since the 80's which I am betting it was.

Dude- just remember what those two SNL muscle-heads used to say:

You can DOOOOO it.

All of it takes practice and eventually, you will pick up a little skill.

I would say to bend the difficulty the OTHER way though- start with FEWER men and a HIGHER extra man setting and then when you struggle and strive, you will be more impressive when you set it back to normal difficulty.

A good exercise that will come in handy on all the later screens is to learn how to handle the Centipede once he gets into the bottom of the screen.

See how long you can keep wave 1 going without making it advance to the next wave. I'm not a wizard by a long shot, but I've made it to 100K on the first screen before. Build up some moves, man!

100K on the first screen...

Thats really impressive that you can last so long on the first screen. So whats the strategy using this plan. just leave a single section of the centipede and then keep shooting spiders? Do you have any other tips as I can not seem to find many on the web. I have also heard about trapping the spider but I am not sure how to do that either. I know that if you can get a vertical row in the middle of the screen and get the centipede coming straight down at you often times you can get the whole thing in one swoop.

Ugh... setting a trap and bug hunting is a *really* pansy way to play the game... (not to mention being 'outlawed' by twin galaxies).

The game's all about mushroom management... build the tube down the middle, clear the mushrooms off the sides as much as possible, keep the fleas off the screen by having enough mushrooms at the bottom...

Pick off the main centipede coming down the tube, then take out the stray heads, doing your best to eliminate the generated shrroms as you kill them.

TG...

I was actually thinking about submitting a score via twin galaxies on centipede. I have several MAME scores with TG but none on the actual arcade hardware and since this is the only machine that I own (aside from a 60 in 1) I was going to submit a score playing the correct way. I was aware that TG does not allow the trap the spider method however I thought it would be cool to figure out how to do it. Ideally I would like to be able to get over 200,xxx before submitting a score and I hear that doing one via a camcorder on a actual machine is a pain in the but you have to record from start to finish and you have to start at the beginning of the tape then you turn on the machine and then you have to play the game where they can see your hands and then you open up the back of the machine after you get your high score and you show the various dip switches to prove what settings you have it on. All of this has to be in one take on the camcorder so yeah it doesnt look like much fun. Either that or head over to funspot during a event which would be fun but $$$ prohibitive.

I understand the tube down the middle, but explain the benefit of clearing the shrooms off the side?

My Centipede restoration is almost done so I'll be back to playing this soon.

My Centipede has the top 3 scores close to 300'000 points I believe. I'll probably never get that high. I think I need a new trackball. It's cool though how Centipedes save the old scores from the 80's.

You don't have to set up any special trap or anything for the first wave thing- just keep the bottom pretty clear of mushrooms.
Let a single centipede segment get to the bottom and start going back up.
New segments will start feeding in from the sides, faster and faster, but there is a limit.
Keep shooting Centipede segments and Spiders too.
All you need is 12K before you die and you're staying alive.

I don't do this for points, but to practice handling the segments once they start feeding in. It is a necessary skill in the later levels to be able to handle them without dieing as that's where most of your action will take place.

You can practice it on any level, but the 1st (and every 12th thereafter) is the best because that damn flea won't drop. I don't try to keep him quiet by keeping a block of mushrooms near the bottom either. I'd rather just keep the bottom section fairly clean and shoot everything.

Get 900 for the Spider whenever you can. It's a waste to settle for 300.

My high is around 250K. That's just playing at top throttle without monkeying with the 1st level. Some people can play it for millions and millions of points.

Remember- all you have to do is average over 12K per man and you can play forever.
