Last November, a friend helped me clean out & remove all my games from my storage unit, and we hauled them all to my new house.

Yesterday, we spent most of the day cleaning out his storage unit (which also had some of my other games in it), and we hauled them to our respective houses.

So, for the first time in many, many, many years, neither of us will be paying rent on a storage unit. However, we now have lots more stuff in our garages.

Here are pics from yesterday before we started loading everything in the truck. 14 games (one smaller gun game was hiding behind the row) plus a mountain of boxes.

No, we're not looking to sell any of these.

Congrats! I've got 3 units and will be down to 2 hopefully in a month. The goal is to get to one by the end of the year.

storage units are madness!

A 10x15 runs me $150/mo. You guys having 3 of those means $450/mo just for storage rental fee's! Insane!

Why not buy a larger house with a mega basement and garage to eliminate the need for storage units forever?

10x20 is $59.00/month X2

10x15 is $39.00

$157.00/MONTH

My friend was paying $65 per month for a 10x20 - in a small town about 40 miles outside the metro area. Cheap, but not at all convenient.

I was paying $122 for a 10x20 in the metro area about five miles from my old house.

If I have to eventually give in and get another one, they run $85 for a 10x10 or $120 for a 10x20 just a couple miles from my current house.

Those are/were all non-climate controlled with exterior drive-up access. For a couple months around my move last year, I was paying $169 for a climate controlled 10x15.

I pay $75 for a 10x15 for a storage unit near the family pizza shop. Was about to go for a 10x20 at $95 but I need to fill out the unit first before I expand it when it becomes available again.

Holy crap! I coudl afford 3 of those at that price! In Michigan the pricing here is triple! wow

When I finally gave up my storage unit after renting there for almost 20 years, the rent was 200/month. This was for a 20x30 unit with an upstairs. The second 20x30 I rented at the same place was 179/month without upstairs. This was in New Orleans.

I have been out of a storage unit for 2 years now. It feels great.

I'll never pay for storage again.

Storage units are a wast of money. I bet most guys pay more in storage fees than the dam games are worth in them. That's just crazy, taking your money just a little at a time.

If you have to have a storage unit then you don't need the things in it. Unless you are moving out doing construction. If you are renting space just because you can't fit all your stuff you are doing to wrong. :)

Never understood the point of having a storage unit(or multiple) to store games. I get picking up machines on a deal, but if you put games in there(usually projects) and don't get to any of them except maybe one or two a year, what's the point of having that many games? They're not being worked on or enjoyed, they're just sitting there collecting dust, and maybe one day will actually get the attention they deserve.

If you're a full time business working on and selling games, I get it. If you're a hobbyist, you're just wasting money you could be investing into one or two great games. Why waste money for a unit holding 10+ games, if you don't touch them for over a year? Not saying all people do that, but I've heard the stories. Buy only what you can fit, and have the spare time to work on, those games are no use to you or anyone else, if they're just tucked away.

On the other hand, store as many as possible, and then when you get out of the hobby, there will be more units to raid :)

From the personal experience desk: small apartment, no more room for games.

In my case I was fortunate enough that both of my units (I was able to get a second one right next to the first one that I had) were within extension cord distance of an outlet without having to run the cord where it could have been a trip hazard. This meant that I could pretty much go over and enjoy the games any time I wanted.

There was enough turnover in the collection that in an average year I probably paid for about 40% to 50% of the rent through selling games. Had I not been buying other games to fill the spaces previously occupied by the ones that had been sold, that number could have been higher.

The downside: having to rent the storage units. For a number of reasons, burnout with the hobby set in and I was able to gradually thin the herd to the point where the storage units were no longer necessary.

Why someone would do it is completely understandable to me, but then again so is why it's not necessarily the right thing for everyone to do.
