Picked up a Final Fight Upright today. The intro screens and demo screens do not have a problem as far as I can tell. But the fight characters are distorted. What would cause this and what will it take to fix this?

Much appreciated.

Ooops, just realized this is the wrong forum, sorry, maybe somebody can move it for me. Thank you...

it's a common problem with CPS1 boards to my understanding. I've never owned one, so I couldn't tell you for 100% certain. either you're faced with some kind of RAM issue (which I don't think anyone's ever figured out how to fix) or it could be as simple as taking the A, B, and C (I think) boards apart and reseating them all.

could be some crud in between the boards, so you might want to brush them out too.

you could additionally try reseating the roms, press them back into the sockets all the way, but be careful not to flex the board at all or you can break traces.

Ya, reseating the roms and boards really helps. Dunno what it is, but my Final Fight and Street Fighter II all have had that same issue. Something about the how they have those boards stacked.............

right, I would think any interlocking board setup would just be increased potential for failure lol.

what's funny is I bumped around my SFA3 board and the game froze up... and those two halves are clipped together. then you got CPS1 or anything else and it's just artifact hell. lol

I've fixed a couple of my own CPS-1 boards. Most video problems on my boards were traced back to the tiny C board that is on top of the B board. These boards do not have theses identifiers silk screened anywhere, that is just what most people call them. A is the bottom board with the JAMMA connection, B is the ROM board, and C is the tiny board on top.

Do the simple things first, like reseat ROMS and board interconnects.

Failing that, look over your C board for cut traces. Just use the beep test on your multi-meter; the process is about as simple as repair gets. If you find one, jumper it and you should have a good working game.

If you can't find problems, you are probably in the same boat as my Magic Sword board. Working all the way, but that C board custom keeps me from playing and enjoying the game.

Due to where the C boards are mounted, they've seen a lot of abuse over the years.

Hope this helps!

Well I pulled out and reseated everything that can be removed. And still no luck. As for finding cut traces, I did not find any.

Still no luck.

I can always try pulling stuff out again and using electronics cleaner and putting stuff back. Can't hurt I guess. Weird how the issue is ONLY with the characters and nothing else. I wish I knew what chip contained the characters..

characters are going to be in multiple roms lol. that's why I suggested it could be a RAM issue.

I have a similar problem on a capcom Magic Sword game, where enemies and player 2 characters are all cut in half -- only one side appears on the screen. Magic Sword is from the same era of Capcom, and the boards look very similar. Re-seating all the roms didn't help me either.

I've been reading a lot lately that it's the A boards that have been crapping on people. Some folks have changed the B + C boards to a known working A board and it solved the problem. One guy even talked about him flexing the A board and all of a sudden it worked fine. So I bet it may be just that.... The A board.

Update: Did a thorough cleaning of the boards with a dry paint brush and contact cleaner. Removed ALL removable objects and reseated them. Still no luck.

This is a game I wanted to turn quickly, and did not want to keep. I do not want to spend any money on it, bummer. Wish I had another board set to swap and find the issue.

Any more ideas?

Just tried my FF board, and I'm getting errors on mine too. Damn you, Capcom!

Question: What tools are needed to test chips? Some kind of chip reader or? When a board is sent out to get repaired, how do they find the issue and fix it?
