Final Fantasy Fans...advice?

I don't personally think that FF7 sucked. But it wasn't as good as 6/3 - the one with Tera and Khefka, whatever you wanna call it. I'm gonna call it FF6.

7 was entertaining, but I agree with the list of annoyances a couple pages back. Didn't care about Chocobo breeding, the Golden Saucer, or anything. But in 6, I totally cared about getting Gogo, leveling up in that special part of the forest, waiting for Shadow, etc etc etc.

FF6 was the best Final Fantasy ever. They have not been as engaging or entertaining since then. I don't need hour long cut-scenes. What I need is gameplay with character and story development WHILE I'm playing. This was done great in FF6.

Also, Chrono Trigger was awesome. I've replayed it a dozen times from scratch, not even NewGame+ and I enjoy it every time. Seeing the future residents for the first time, Chrono taking one for the entire team and trying to get him back.. Man. I might need to replay again.

Don't even get me started on the abomination that was Chrono Cross. Such garbage.

I ended up downloading Final Fantasy IV: The After Years on WiiWare. After downloading, I jumped in and was right at home, following up on the Final Fantasy 2 (SNES) storyline. I beat the initial episode(?) after 5 or 6 hours. There are 7 or 8 more, most priced at $3 a piece. There is another one priced at $8. All told, it will be around $40. Total nostalgia, totally fun. If you liked FF2 and have a Wii, you should definitely check this out.

You know why 7 was the WORST game in the series? Because they completely and utterly FAILED to make me give one iota of crap about any of the characters.

I lauged, literally, LAUGHED AND FELL OFF THE BED I WAS SITTING ON, at the "critical dramatic moment." I'm not sure that I could even take the game seriously after that point in the "story", if you want to call that jumbled ridiculous cast of goobs "characters" then be my guest....was more like a bad saturday morning cartoon. Good music, horrible graphics (Yeah, I'm sorry, I was and AM a PC gamer, and even for that era, FF7's graphics were TRASH compared to PC...jaggies SUCK.), decent FMVs, expected battle mechanics but nothing really engaging other than watching summon animations.

Also, there were technical issues with the run of discs at the start. FMVs locking up due to data stream errors, etc. At the time, I had to rent an additional copy to get past the second disc because one specific FMV locked up and would not play. Worked perfectly fine with a different disc. Moot point now, but it definitely chapped my arse that I had to go rent a game that had just been purchased.

Storywise....I think 8 is my personal favorite, 6 after that, then 10, 4, 5. But my god, yes, the Draw system in 8 is the most vile combat mechanic ever made, lol.

I say play em all, but FF7 is the most over-hyped piece of mediocrity ever. Honestly, they could do a LOT with a remake to improve it, then it might deserve some of the acclaim it's given, but I think Square is rightfully too afraid of the slavering hordes of rabid fanboys to even touch it for anything other than a straight port re-release.

9 by far was/is my all time favorite. It ties into the very first FF, and it is a classic old school RPG. They had an interview with some of the creators of the FF series and even they have said that 9 is their favorite out of all of them. FF7 is just too overrated. I completely agree that none of the characters were interesting or that you finished the game not really caring about any of them. Plus the music in FF9 blows away FF7's music.

To be honest, I was a diehard FF fan. FF1/ SNES (US) II and III. When VII came out, I lost interest and never looked back. :(

You made no mention on V. (available on Playstation 1 or 2, I forget). So many character classes!

I vound VII and VIII amongst my wife's old PS1 games when cleaning up, organizing all our games. I've never played either, and we don't even have a PS1 anymore (although I think they'll play in the PS2?)

They should. From what I recall, FF Tactics was the only FF game that didn't play 100% perfectly on a PS2.
