Final Fantasy Fans...advice?

Not that anyone cares (probably), but I'm playing FF 3 for the NES. I don't quite understand the job system (the game wants you to change jobs for certain abilities, but to do so you need to re-assign different armor, weapons, etc), so I've largely ignored it :) So far, I'm liking it overall...seems to be a big jump from the original FF toward the SNES FF2...

Beat this one last night. It was a very good game. Unlike others in the series, you have 4 characters throughout the game...no "come & go" nonsense. The jobs were weird throughout the game...I started with 2 Knights, and 2 red mages, and ended up with an M. Knight (can do some magic), a Ninja, & 2 Sages (can cast white & black magic, and summon). You can change jobs for any character at any time (20-25 jobs available). For instance, in one place, I changed to a thief for the ability to unlock locked doors. Each character class has their own set of weapons/armor, and keeping track of it all was more trouble than it was worth, IMO.

The ending sequence took me an hour, and I had the emulator running at 150% speed. You enter a cave, and work your way through to the end without any save points. Along the way you have to fight at least 6 pretty major bosses, so it's not a simple cave walk.

Anyway, I'd recommend this game to anyone that liked FF2 on the SNES. It is similar in gameplay, although graphically closer to the NES version.

Now onto the next one....

I'll just keep bumping this thread periodically...

I beat FF7 this past weekend. Overall, I was disappointed...perhaps the hype over the last 10 years raised my expectations too much? My main gripes were:

1) Summons take forever. After you've seen them once or twice, you should be able to skip them. Sephiroth's solar system destroying attack in the final battle is beyond ridiculous. You're trying to save 1 planet, and his spell destroyed 8 planets (but doesn't kill you). And he does it more than once (if you survive). So, the planets grew back?

2) Lack of side quests. I'm sure I'll get corrected on this, but I thought the game played remarkably linearly. Aside from the sunken ship, I don't think I explored anything that was not inherent to the story. I didn't bother with the Weapons, I didn't bother with Chocobo breeding, I didn't find any hidden characters, I didn't climb the tower that was only open to residents, etc. I never felt like I needed to go searching for better gear, and none of it seemed all that interesting to me.

3) Kind of short/easy. This ties in with #2, I'm sure. I think my total time was 27 hours or so, without any guides/tips/walkthroughs. Not SHORT, but I expected it to be a bit longer. And I think I only died 3 or 4 times along the way, and not once in the final sequence (from dropping into the crater to killing Sephiroth).

4) Annoying situations. The Golden Saucer, Chocobo races, snowboarding, submarine attacking, etc. These did nothing but waste time with shoddy controls. The worst was the Huge Materia on the rocket ship. 3 Minutes to guess the code? 256 combinations? Horrible clues from Cid? Was I supposed to write them all out, try them, and reset if I failed? Or just buy the guide? I did neither, moving on without it...

5) Annoying/Pointless characters. Cait Sith was worthless. Red XII was slightly better, but still seemed like an afterthought. Cid had no apparent reason to join your group, but did anyway. Cloud, Tifa & Barrett were the only ones with sufficient story, and I found Barrett to be annoying, anyway (beat the game with Cloud, Tifa & Cid).

6) Horribly long story breaks. I mean, it seemed like 20 minutes at times of Cloud whining about anything & everything. I like a good story, but this was (at times) excessive.

That said, I did play & enjoy the game, at times for hours at a time. It was pretty good, but not good enough that I'm going to go back and try to find all the materia or weapons. I'll move onto the next one, and probably never look back at this one.

did you get yuffie and vincent? master materia, get the underwater materia, omnislash, golden chocobos, ultimate weapons, knights of the round summon? beat all the weapons? There are a lot of big side quests. The reason the game is so remarkable in my book is because when it came out I had never seen anything like it at the time, and seriously still havent seen anything that compares to the ff series in my opinion.

try 8, I feel with your negatives on 7 you would love 8

and after getting everything my first save file was around 100+ hours, including using a guide

I can not wait for 13..

I didn't do any of those. Anything that requires a guide isn't worth doing. :)

none of what you suggested was even hinted to me during the game, and I beat sephiroth without it...so what's the point?

I'll try 8 when I get a bit of time.

well sorryyyyyy.. I was just letting you know there was a whole nother world out there.

yea try 8, not to much story pauses like you were saying were in 7 (which there were), keep in mind though summons on every FF game take a while haha, new animations on 8, it looks a million times better than 7, and its 4 discs now i believe

haha. I believe you. I'm just not motivated to do it. :D

Time to get my hands on FF8.

Trust me... Skip VIII...

Get IX instead, best of the series IMO.

Then when you get up to it.. play though X, skip X2, skip XI, XII's decent'sh... ... but I'd've skipped it if I could. Fran was the only good thing about that game.

Go back and check out V on the SNES... I think it go released not to long ago for the DS, or PSX, or something like that. Good game.

skip 8? what did you not like about it, I didnt like 9 at all, seemed to kiddish to me.

and theres no V on snes, theres 2 (4 in jp) and 3 (6in jp)

Sorry, I always go by the Japanese numbers.

It was released in the US on the PSX as part of the Final Fantasy Collection. It's got a pretty decent story and good game play. This was the first time I had seen the Jobs system, so I think that's why I liked it so much.

And as far as what I didn't like about 8. The story, the enemies, the battle system... It's an even bigger pile of crap than 7. That's right, you heard me. 7 sucked. I just don't care for the "modern" type Final Fantasys. Cars and computers and gun blades, blah.

They have all sucked starting with VII. You heard me. FF is supposed to be 8 or 16-bit, bitches. 2-D RPGs are the bizomb, yo. I-VI all the way.

You're both right. But technically V isn't on the SNES (as StreetzKing said), it's on the Super Famicom. But some on Streetz, you know what he meant. Jeez. If I say IV on SNES was the best, you know I mean "II." Square has used the original numbering in the States since VII, as it should be, so get over it.

The never mind, you fail :)

So what, you just assumed no FFV ever? SNES only had II and III (which as we know were really IV and VI, respectively), but the Super Famicom has IV, V, and VI.

I'll admit that 7 was pretty awesome for the time, but trying to play it now is just painful. Regardless, I didn't even like it then. I've always disliked RPGs where I have a sword and dudes are attacking me with machine guns. WTF?

alright well I knew there was a 5 but never saw it in person nor did I know what console it came out on. I started on FF7 as my first FF, remind you I was born in 87. I have now been playing the originals like 2and3 (4,6). I love the originals and love going back to its roots, however I still think 7 to me was something amazing because like you said at its time, it was awesome.

All right, time to bump this, and hopefully get it moved to the new Console forum...

I'm playing FF8 now. I am a few hours into disc 2 at this point, and below are my thoughts...

The good:
a) Relatively fast paced, no painfully long story breaks.
b) Good variety of characters and control of your group.

The bad:
a) The junctions are confusing. I'm not sure I understand them at all.
b) The weapons are terribly difficult to upgrade. So far, I've upgraded 1 weapon. I have the magazines, but I need to find the items (steel pipe?), and can't seem to do it. This leads to constant GF calling, which takes a long time, and takes a lot of fun out of the battles.
c) Laguna. I assume the flashes to the other group will become important, but I just don't care about them at all.

That said, I am progressing through the game, and enjoying it for the most part. I think I'm liking it more than 7, even with the complaints I have so far...

Wow. A year & a half later, I'm finally at the end of FF8 to fight Ultimecia. As you may guess, I took 6-8 months off in the middle (gameplay is around 50 hours). All in all, I think the game was OK. My final take was consistent with my initial thoughts.

1) Laguna stuff was tedious at times, and altogether more annoying than insightful.

2) The difficulty level required to upgrade weapons was very annoying. I didn't begin to collect 'Rare' items until I learned the MUG command, which wasn't until nearly the end of the game. And when you finally do upgrade, the impact is negligible.

3) You may be saying "Why'd it take you so long to learn 'MUG"? Because I had no idea about Drawing GF's, so I missed Carbuncle, Leviathan, Alexander, Eden & one or two others during the game (I got them at the end just before Ultimecia).

4) The whole junctioning thing is pretty annoying. It took me 3 discs of playing to 'get it', and even then I was using the Auto, mostly. I had no idea about what junctions well, the need for LOTS of magic (ie 100 Firagas junction more significantly than 5 Firagas). The fact that different monsters have different strengths & weaknesses didn't help. It would have been better (albeit more complicated) to allow me to change my junctions within a fight, like you could change your sword/armor in FF2 for the SNES.

5) The 'even-ness' of leveling up. I liked the standard "as you gain higher level, you require more EXP to level up" system. The blanket 1000 EXP to level up made sure that no one else would ever catch Squall.

I realize that may seem like a lot of complaining, but I think the game was pretty good. A bit whiny at the beginning, but a solid game. Assuming I can beat Ultimecia, I'll move on to the next one (FFIX, I guess?)

At this pace, I'll be playing FFXIII in a about 8 years.

IX=best for PSX.

Most will argue that VII is better, and while I agree it is an excellent game, I think IX is more polished. It did come out later in the life of the Playstation, so that is a given.

Did you go to the Island Closest to Heaven or the Hell? They make getting your characters to max level very easy. But, wait until your summons learn the stat boosting ability before you power level. once you have a GF equipped with the ability, you can gain an extra +1 to power or something similar.

As for IX, my favorite. I'm doing a complete run on it right now. Can't do 100% complete, because of one side quest that is time dependent.

Do the chocobo hot and cold sidequest as early as possible. It will enable you to get more powerful weapons at an earlier point. But, don't neglect the less powerful weapons, as you can gain abilities from them.

I've poured so many hours in to the three Final Fantasy titles on the PSX. I've done 100% on VII, 99% on VIII and pretty close to 100% on IX before.

yea 9 was awesome, I loved 8 with the new art style and the card game, would play them again in a heart beat.. i recently started going through 7 again but stopped once aeris died. might go back to it
