Not true in all cases. I used an old 5v cell phone charger to power the LED strip and I had to connect black to ground and yellow to 5v to get it to work(this would be the outside two pins on the controller btw).
Not sure if my wiring harness is different or if using 5v changes anything but just a headsup.
