I have a particle board Galaga with a large chunk missing (see attached). This looks like melamine-covered particle board.

The artwork otherwise is in really good shape so I would rather not sand and paint the entire side.

Any repair will obviously look "repaired" but I'm assuming with bondo and black satin paint it would look better than this. Any ideas?

you want to give the bondo something to hang on to or it will just fall right off

i'd drill some holes into the wood for some small screws sunk below the flat surface plane so the bondo forms around the screws and hardens if that makes sense
then just paint it black
people know after 40 years these things get knackered about and have war wounds etc. but if you do a good job, some might never know

they sell this newer lightweight bondo now
doesn't shrink at all and isn't as heavy as the standard bondo

I have my own formulation of black paint that I buy by the gallon for all my touch ups and new cabinet painting
its a nice dark black that takes a week to fully dry but any black will do for your color matching. take the back door in and see if they can match that for you good luck

Thanks - I was also thinking maybe that mix-on-demand epoxy stuff. If I layered it on I could probably get a hard surface, then be able to sand and get some paint on it.

Basically I just want it to look better than it does today.

nice thing about bondo is that it is easily sanded. that epoxy, good luck getting it smooth so you cant tell that its there

one drip or blob not in the right place holy mackerel getting that smooth

if you do the bondo right, no one will ever know except you and me

layer epoxy ? LOL
good luck
