From what I can tell from all the resto threads, the process of welding a thin piece of metal under the hole and then filling with bondo is the most used method. Is there a method that someone can recommend that doesn't require welding? The two cp's I'm thinking of in particular are Tapper and Journey.

The Tapper is a bit more of a challenge because the hole I need to fill cuts into the slot that one of the beer handles stick out of. Because the dust washer needs to fit under there, the bottom side needs to be relatively smooth as well.

For the Journey, there are just two extra holes where it doesn't matter what it looks like underneath as long as it doesn't interfere with the placement of the leafswitches for the original buttons.

You may also use oversize steel patches with JB Weld it should overlap at least an inch if possible. You will need to trim it to your specifications. Once it has cured you can paint the patch black. Then use Bondo on the top. It will not be as strong as a true weld but it should hold for most repairs.

Rough up the backside with sandpaper. Then use fiberglass cloth and two part fiberglass resin.
I use to buy it at Walmart but I don't know if they still have it. Might have to go to an auto paint supplier.

If you don't mind an "arcade hack", put a new CPO over the holes, then cut a piece of plexiglass the size of the control panel top and drill the holes you need. Put the plexi on top and mount the buttons, joysticks, etc. through the plexi and you will have a solid surface regardless of the "swiss cheese" underneath.

Ken, I just don't think the plexi would look good/right on a Tapper or Journey.

The repair I was talking about should work pretty well...unless you plan on using a ball ping hammer on the control panel. Just saying, it is a pretty good product! Yes you should rough up the joining surfaces to get rid of the paint first before applying the product which will result in a super strong bond.
