"Feel free to make an offer" - Greed?

With the "Make an Offer" thing, that's a passive action somebody's doing, even if they're trying to get a ton of money out of something that way, they're not actively attacking you or anything, nothing to get upset about.

In a sale or negotiation or whatever, nobody has any power over you that you don't give them. If somebody tells me to make an offer on something, I'll just make them an offer. Nothing they do, say, mention, the way they word it... none of that can make me not get a good deal on something. I'm going to pay what I'm going to pay and not a penny more...

which leads to the next lesson in negotiating, which is actually the #1 rule. Be willing, in ANY sale, to walk away without buying it. You can't negotiate a good price if you're not completely willing to not buy the item. Also, about 20% of the time when you won't agree to buy it and walk, the seller will get in contact with you and accept your last offer.

If you run across something that you can't walk away from, just pay them whatever they're asking.

I just recently had an experience with this. I won't mention the item, but it was indeed make on offer on an item that looked incomplete an non working without the other parts (that I happen to have). I made what I thought was a fair offer of 50 + actual shipping. It would have been a heavy SOB and I could have just said 100 shipped since it would have been about the same. So I offer.......and wait and wait.....and wait.........Until its finallly posted that it sold. So in essence, I was just involved in a "drive by" auction. Didn't know I as out bid or even that I wasn't in the running. Didn't even get a PM that someone had offered x dollars. So yes. I was very put off. And I think from now on, my auto reply should be the following,
"This ain't EBAY! You sulley our forum with your BS auction. Promply remove it and go fornicate yourself with a red hot poker"

Thanks for posting this.......As you can tell, I needed to vent.

For Sale, newly rebuilt complete Amplifone monitor, the tube is a medium resolution Rauland M48AAWOOX with no burn, recently rebuilt by one of the best in the biz with new flyback. If you have a Star Wars, you will be amazed at the difference this monitor makes.

I am open to a trade (plus cash) for a WG6100 also in good shape.

I have shipped many monitors before with good success. Will be shipped in a monitor box, properly packed, and boards will come separate.

Best offer takes it.

Funny.....................We are all guilty from time to time.

I've just recently encountered a situation like that. Found an ad on craigslist with this business owner that had a large collection of games from all his laundromats and junk like that. Which I believe he owns quiet a bit of real estate to store all this stuff plus all his businesses and much more he would like to lease to opportunists.

I ask him if I could take a look at this collection because I noticed he had some uprights and sitdowns of Hydro Thunder. He told me all the games he had in one corner where not working and needed repairs, but of course he had all the Hydro Thunders in that corner..........
He then asks me to make an offer, me thinking "great I have to throw out some reasonable numbers," so I think of some auctions I'd seen on ebay and I tell him $700 for the upright.
He then says he could not possibly go lower than $1200 for one unit, $1000 un-repaired and $1200 if he sent it out for repairs................come on......seriously.......I began telling him stuff like that is not always easy to fix (could of been a fuse lolz), its 10 years old and Midway declared bankruptcy in 2009............he said he paid $1760 for each single unit and would not settle any lower than $1200...............................if your going to pick that number then why did he not post it?!?!? Why ask me to make an offer if your going to shoot down a reasonable price for a non-working unit, which I haven't even had time to make out what was wrong with it.........

You, sir, won. Be happy about that. ;) Walk away from that bullshit.

I had a box of non-working boards, Well semit working was the case of a few of them.

Anyways I put up a post make an offer. The first offer I would have received would have gotten them. I didn't want to ship but a KLOVer PMed me offered to cover any shipping and toss me some cash for my time.

He sent me a shipping label I shipped it that day. The price we settled on...

I asked him to make a donation to the Red Cross for the Japan Quake/Tsunami fund.

That was what I asked in the end. I didn't want any money, it was junk to me, but I figured if someone wanted it it was theirs.

In the end this person got a couple of working CAPCOM A boards, and a SFII B board with graphics issues. Hell board 4 might even work.

I got freed up space, he got something I assume he can use, I am happy with it.

Moral to the story, some times "make an offer" means just throw out some random ass number as I don't really give a shit.

Ha! Guilty as charged!

Me too! Listing something with no price is something that bugs me as well and I just did it too. Once I had a price in mind I went back and put it in, but when I first listed it I only had a ballpark KLOV $ figure, but didn't have it pinned down when I listed it I .............................and I am greedy! ..............................sometimes.

Cheers!

If someone says make offer, and you don't like those sort of deals, then don't make an offer. Making an offer of .50 makes you even more of a douche imho. Why stoop to that level ?

Its not the make it offer thing that bothers me. It's when you give an offer that seems fair and the other party results to name calling over a price. That is the issue I have with it. If you don't care for the offer then don't start with insults over the price.
I love key stroke commandos by the way.

The OP and this entire thread is hilarious...

In a hobby where condition is on a sliding scale, and so tend to be prices(especially given ones local are), "make an offer" isn't a big deal.

I don't know how many times I've NOT listed something here because I don't know what to ask for what I have, and the times I have I've gotten emails/PMs from ASSHOLES with too much of a personal opinion regarding this.

I've sold stuff for less than I had in mind with "make an offer" because the offer...was a reasonable one, near what I had in mind.
The buyer, got it for less than what I would have otherwise put it up for, and I had other HIGHER offers after his. But he made the first reasonable offer, I took it and stuck with it.

If you don't like "Make an offer" posts, STFU and move along. Find a "Set in stone", possibly higher price, if that's what you want...but don't bitch about items that don't follow this.

I agree make an offer and move along. Its the smart mouths that get hacked over what they think is a bs offer that I don't like. If you do not like an offer no need to result to key stroke commando tactics over a offer. Its just an offer don't get so uptight over it.
That also includes with the know it all people who are the price gods of arcade machines.

Sometimes, I'd really prefer a trade and do not want to pigeonhole myself to a price.
