If you have a few minutes, and your Space Duel is easily accessible, could you do me a favor?...

Either upright or cocktail, doesn't matter, can you go into Space Duel self-test and on the sound test screen (a large box reducing size with every tone) see if you get 8 distinct tones? I'm only getting 7. Manual says there should be 8. I swapped out both pokeys with known good pokey's and still only getting 7. You're supposed to get 4 tones, with a high and low for each tone (for a total of 8). I am missing the first low tone. FYI, I had to look it up in the manual how to go into self-test. You have set the utility switch for self-test and then to actually go into self-test, you have to hit both start buttons when is says to hit both buttons on screen to go into self test (careful, as otherwise, you could zero out all audits), and then you have to trip the slam switch. On a Space Duel cocktail, the slam switch is in the upper right inside the coin door. The slam switch is just a leaf switch. According the manual, on the upright, the slam switch is inside the coin door on the left side.

Since I swapped pokeys and am still getting only 7 tones, my theory is that's the way it is, and while they (Atari) planned for the self-test to give you 8 tones, in actuality, you only get 7. But if you get 8 tones, then there's something wrong with my board.

Would appreciate if a few people can do this quick test and report back. Thanks in advance.

I get 8 tones on my Space Duel (upright). The second one is very hard to distinguish from the first, so perhaps maybe you're just not hearing the distinction?

Don't mind the fat ugly guy in the monitor reflection. LOL

Thank you very much for doing this. Maybe I'm getting old (well, that's a fact) and my hearing is bad. But I can't hear the first low sound (second sound overall) on your recording either. Sounds exactly like mine. But if you can distinguish it, great.

Would like to hear from a few others.

Here's the youtube of mine:

Hmmmm, I hear 8 in your video. Seems the same as mine to me.

I think you're good but what do I know. LOL

Both vids sound the same to me and seem like they're both missing the first low tone.
Maybe it's an error in the manual, or you both have the same issue.
I really need a space duel.

I imagined Joe's voice to have a lower tone. Am I right? 😸
The trick with the POKEY tones is to associate a tone with each progressive square (largest to the last "dot").
