fatherpain's Smash TV/Total Carnage/Robotron Multi-jamma set-up

I offered to post up the images of fatherpain's multi-jamma setup that lets him play Smash TV, Total Carnage, and Robotron in a Smash TV cabinet. At one point, this was my plan as I have a Smash TV cabinet myself, but then I lucked out and found a Robotron cocktail local to me.

At any rate, fatherpain uses a 2-in-1 Jamma switcher with Smash TV / Total Carnage mounted to the RHS of the cabinet (from the front) and Robotron mounted on the LHS of the cabinet. He keeps Smash TV connected to one of the switcher's channels and then manually swaps the connector from robotron to total carnage by reaching through the coin door. Here is a pic of the complete setup (and what is that...blue bubblegum holding the the volume pots in place?):

Here is a close up of the clever Robotron PCB mounting with additional standoffs to stack the Robo pcbs:

And a close-up of the RHS with Mike's 2-in-1 switcher mounted above the Smash TV pcb (that is Total Carnage in the front).

And here is everyone's dream-come-true, Robotron in 25" Glory...

Next up, he is thinking of adding Tapper...but at this point, I'll let him field any of your questions....

Thanks, for sharing the pics, fatherpain!

Karate Champ :p

I'd keep it how it is though. Smash TV running those three games is just right imo. :)

This would go SO MUCH SMOOTHER if you used a Jrok board in place of the original Robotron board. No one would ever know that it wasn't running an original boardset. And Crazy Climber CAN be adapted to Jamma. As for switching, use one of Clay Cowgil's Multi-jammas, and you would be all set...

A big thanks for posting this, Scott! I'm abit technically challenged when it comes to posting pix :)

I can't take full credit...I originally wanted to only have SmashTV and Total Carnage, which I why I picked up Mike's Arcade's 2in1 adapter.. Following JeffC's lead. He has details on his 720zone on how to pull it off.. Since I'm somewhat challenged in this type of stuff, my good friend Stuffmonger came over and wired it in for me...While he was doing this, I was telling him how much I'd like to pick up a nice dedicated Robotron upright and he suggested throwing the Jammatized robotron pcb in. Dunno why I hadn't thought of it before, Stuffmonger is like a mad, evil genius at times :) Once that was settled, we tried throwing in Clay's 8 in 1 multijamma with 5 daughter cards + computer power supplies but for some reason, couldn't get it to work or switch between games. Defeated but not broken...we went back to Mike's 2in1, which has been great. I just wish they would put out a 6in1...2 just doesnt seem enough. Manually swapping between robotron and Total carnage is doable the way its set up now, however. I plan on adding some jamma extenders to make it easier. I might try convincing Stuffmonger to try Clay's kit again, but I'm not sure if I like the idea of having 5 or 6 pcbs powered at the same time to play just one.

As far as the pots, no thats not bubblegum, lol. I got a little lazy and stuck them on using Silicone RTV. That stuff works great, even though it looks abit ghetto, heh.

Crazy climber is horizontal. It will work. Just so happens, I have a crazy climber jamma adapter and will pull my pcb out of my crazy climber cocktail, plug it in and take pix, when time permits and send them to M_Mcgovern to post :)

Tom

Yes, but it has a vertical monitir.

I can only take credit for mounting the pcb to the wood.. Mark Spaeth (Hudsonarcade) actually devised the stack when I requested him to supply me with a jammatized Robotron boardset and adapter. Stuffmonger replaced the fingerboard and remapped the controls to work on Smashtv P1 controls. I haven't checked what Robotron P2 is mapped to, but itd be nice to have it to Smashtv P2 to not have to switch spots when playing 2P robotron. Hudson arcade also jammatized the Tapper boardset I'm planning on installing.

heheh, one of these days I'll add crazy climber. Garage is a mess atm, but it shouldn't be to difficult to toss it in there. I'd have to remap the P1 and P2 jamma adapter to the smashtv P1 and P2 controls but that would be pretty cool actually...I have an upright but am trading it. Didn't like having to trade places during 2P games...but I'm keeping a crazy climber cocktail so the will only be in temporarily in smashtv.

No shit, if you can slap in Crazy Climber, then Im following your lead and doing the exact same thing.

I'm not really familiar with the Jrok board, what's the advantage? smaller size?...but I do prefer using original pcbs so I know its the exact game. The only complaint I have is it doesn't save hs! But its supposed to without batteries...Not sure whats wrong with it.

We tried one of Clay's multis and couldn't get it to work...mebbe when all the dust settles from all my ongoing projects I can convince stuffmonger to try again. Mebbe we just got crappy power supplies to power it?

Tom

Thanks again m_mcgovern! Its pretty neat seeing the interest in SmashTV's possibilities. If anyone would like more detailed pix to duplicate any portion of this I will gladly take more pix. There's ton's of space inside SmashTV... To add additional pcbs, I might try adding a shelf or something, haven't had time to investigate.

Here are games that could be put in addition to smashtv:

total carnage
robotron
cloak and dagger (may have to track this down now, heh)
crazy climber
crazy climber 2
tapper

karate champ is a no because its vert. Too bad because its has 4 joysticks just like smashtv :(
I'm also contemplating berzerk/with frenzy zpu due to the sheer size of the boardset. jammatized pcb is currently mounted on a piece of plywood, its so huge. Itd probably fit nicely inside smashtv, but would require adding a button to the cp, which probably wouldnt be cool. I suppose it could fire using the P1 2nd joystick but that might not feel right as opposed to a button.

Any other game ideas come to mind?

Tom
