I bought a copy of Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box off of ebay recently and I just got it in the mail. It is clearly fake. The case is wrong (clear instead of black), the artwork and manual are bad photocopies (crooked and blurry), and the cart won't play in a DSi. Looking back, I don't know what I was thinking. It was from Asia, way too cheap ($10), and the auction used a stock photo. I usually steer clear of any auction like this.

Anyway, has this happened to anyone else? I assume that this violates ebay's rules. I think I'm gonna just email the dude and tell him to refund my money or else.

I suppose it depends on the listing - but it's worth a shot. Did their feedback not tip you off (does the ebaynegs tool still work? I haven't used it in forever).

I generally won't order something like that unless there's a unique image on the listing. Even then, I might still be suspicious.

They do GBA games as well. I've got a couple (didn't buy them first hand, they were in a box of stuff I got)

The GBA games have a battery for saving, instead of flash memory.

I tried to convince my boss that one of the games that was traded in was a pirate, but he wouldn't believe me. It was a Pokemon Diamond in a clearish white case that was thicker than typical, and the label was as described... but not even a copy of the original.

He had almost all positive feedback, even from people who had bought DS games from him. I guess most of those people couldn't recognize a fake when they see it.

I'm gonna try to get my money back, but it's not a big deal. I'm not really out much money and the game actually does play in a DS or a DS lite. I don't like the idea of supporting this kind of activity with my money though.

We get people who try and trade that junk in at my store. Today someone had two pirated Pokemon games with really odd labels. Fake DS stuff is all over ebay I know. It's so cheap and easy to make.

Yeah there's loads of fake GBA and DS stuff on eBay... All fake knock-offs from China.

Thankfully most either have a note saying that the game doesn't work on DSi which is a dead give-away, or don't have pictures of the actual game, just a scan of the box art.

And the GBA auctions for lots of all the Pokemon games are all fakes.

If it's from China, and it's DS/GBA games, 99% chance it's fake.

Simple fact is, if the game works, most people don't care it's a fake. They just care it was cheap.

I looked at those auctions and I think they are probably legit. You have to be more careful when people are selling American stuff out of Asia and they have large quantities of them for super cheap. That's not the case with these auctions. These people also have good feedback and the kind of person buying from these guys would probably be able to spot a fake. You still might not want to take the chance at those prices though.

I want to get a copy of Judgement Silversword and all of the copies on ebay are out of Asia, but that is to be expected with that game. All of the auctions for it have actual photographs and the prices are super high, so I think they are legit. I really want to find a cheaper copy tough, but one has not come up on ebay for months now.

well the only problem with ketsui is I havent seen someone with an actual picture. Just the box art thats from a website.. So Idk what to do. i dont wanna gamble 150..

Your scenario sucks and im sorry you got screwed. The best thing to come out of it is a warning to other buyers and you might have just saved me money, thanks for the investment!

I've got one I'd sell if you want man. I'd rather see it go to another KLOV'r to be honest. I love the game, but handheld shooters just don't quite click with me.

I can/do have actual pics ;) and I don't want $150.

that sucks man. glad I have an R4 flash cart :p

I've got an R4 too, but it's just for trying out games before I buy and for putting a bunch of games on one cart (games I already own). I'm not into stealing from the people who make the games. Without them, there will be no more games.

I see where you're coming from. I pretty much just buy RPG's, lots of hard work on those that's for sure.

Well I sent the seller a message on ebay asking for a full refund and he responded back acting like he had no idea it was fake. He said he just bought it and played it a little and wanted to sell it. It's definitely a lie since I looked and he has sold at least four other copies of this same game in the past. Anyway, he said he'd give me a refund if I send the game back. I'm nervous about this for two reasons. One, I don't want to send it back and then have him back out of giving me a refund. Two, I don't like the idea of him just selling this fake to another person. What would you do? I would prefer to just destroy this fake, but I also want my money back.

well for the refund to work does ebay have to be involved? (like report a problem first) I never had a problem with a seller so I dont know? if not then thats a gamble, I mean, pending his feedback, and it seems he at least cares a little, If he didnt he wouldnt have responded.

Send it back, use a tracking number and report it to ebay.

It's illegal to sell pirates on ebay, (not to mention against the law), so it's not like the seller has much he can do in the situation.

Ebay has articles on their site teaching how to tell fake games from real with pictures. It's a good read an d it taught me a few new things.

Oh I can spot a fake game, but the seller just used a stock photo. I usually steer clear of any auction using a stock photo, but the low price got the best of me.

Years back I bought a couple of Sega Dreamcast games off ebay (auction indicated they were legit) and when they arrived they were just copies. I was not happy. Contacted the seller and explained my position and he refunded my $$. Definitely worth a try.
