Failed cap kit.

So, a really awesome member here, freckledpeas, came over to trade/buy some machines from me, and he pushed me in the right direction on where to go with this. I think that I may have just been a bit too frustrated to actually see things clearly, but right now the board is sitting downstairs ready to be capped. He even walked me through the first one, so I think that I'll be good to go!

I'll update the thread with the results.

That's great, yawl really have some great guy's up in that part of the country who are a real credit to this hobby.

So! Good news and bad news. I put all the caps in no problem, it was actually kind of fun, and I managed to find where everything plugged back in to, it actually wasn't too rough.

Bad news is when I went to screw the monitor back in place, I pushed against the board on the back of the monitor with my side when I was trying to hold it still, and it cracked in about four separate pieces.

So whole new question now, can these be bought pretty easily, or is it just one of those things I need to find when someone parts theirs out?

Thanks! I almost had it!

Which board? Neck board on back of tube? Did the neck of the tube crack?
If it's just the board you might be able to solder the traces on the board back together by soldering stiff wire across the break along with a lot of solder. You can use the clipped off leads from the capacitors, maybe lay 2 on a trace or more depending on the size of the copper trace.
Here's one someone repaired a cracked board with pictures

I don't think anything besides the board broke, but would this be repairable with the way you suggested?

...and I actually turned it on when it was like this just to see if it would work, but the screen was blank, I guess that's no surprise.

I would say it's possable. The hard part would be if it has traces on both sides of the board and if any run under the socket or other componets. If all the traces are on the back side then should be easer. I would try small amounts of super glue on the cracked edges of the board and glue it back together. Then sand the mask, green stuff off the copper traces on both sides of the breaks and solder wire across the break. It might take a wile but should work if you repair all the breaks. Or you could see if someone has a neck board for sale and you just swap all the wires one at a time. I assume some my have a plug but some might be slodered to the board.

Thats an easy fix, just use resistor leads to bridge the traces after you scrape off the green mask. Just make sure you get all of the traces or you will probably get some fireworks.

Oh, and it would have been a lot easier if you would have been methodical and careful in the beginning.... ;) That "scared I won't get it working again" feeling will pass, and you will eventually want to repair it 100% no matter how long it takes, and you will be happier with the results overall as well.

I actually just purchase a new neck board not 5 minutes ago, so hopefully all will be well within a few days.

Fingers crossed.

I don't remember how I do EZ's... I know I don't take them apart completely. If I had one sitting in front of me I could probably remember/explain it. But I just take the main chassis off and just flip out out of the frame, pretty much everything stays attached. I used to take them apart, but they're nightmares, when I just started flipping the chassis out, they became a joke.

Just thought that I'd give an update on this machine. So I got the neck board in the mail earlier today from a member here, got out my crimper and connectors and put all the wires in the right spot, and now my monitor is fully functional and I got to play my games finally!

Pretty sure there was sound before I took the monitor out, but now there's no output. I guess I just forgot to plug something in? I'll look for older threads and hopefully I'll find something that relates to my current problem.

Thanks everybody!
